Académico de Viseu Rallies Past Estoril in Stoppage Time for 2-1 Thriller
Messeguem struck in the 87th minute to seal the win for Académico de Viseu after Guitane had leveled the score, in a match where Estoril created more chances but still fell to its sixth defeat.

Académico de Viseu grabbed an early lead, watched Estoril pull level midway through the second half, and then found the winner almost at the death. 2-1 at the Estádio Municipal do Fontelo, with the decisive goal arriving in the 87th minute, in a Liga Portugal clash that swung in the home side's favor at just the right moments.
Cihan Kahraman struck first, curling a left-footed effort from outside the box low and inside the post in the 28th minute, set up by Anthony Correia. There had been warning signs from both sides before that: André Lacximicant and Milan Robin had both tested the target for Estoril in the opening half hour, while Robinho responded for Académico de Viseu with a shot that narrowly missed the mark. The sides went into the break with the score at 1-0.
Estoril wasted no time responding after halftime. In the 55th minute, Rafik Guitane leveled the score with a left-footed strike from the center of the box that found the middle of the goal, assisted by João Carvalho. The equalizer looked fair given the visitors' persistence: Nail Omerovic rattled the post in the 60th minute, and João Carvalho forced a strong save from the home goalkeeper with a shot headed for the top corner. Estoril also had clear chances through Ricard Sánchez and Guitane himself in the minutes that followed, but couldn't find a way to turn the game around.
The match looked headed for a draw until Soufiane Messeguem stepped up. In the 87th minute, he fired a left-footed shot from outside the area that snuck in low, just inside the left post, assisted by Alejandro Mestanza, restoring Académico de Viseu's lead. There were no more twists after that, despite nearly four minutes of stoppage time played at the end.
What the Numbers Say
The stats point to an even contest, with Estoril slightly sharper in front of goal despite the final result.
| Stat | Académico de Viseu | Estoril |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 51.2 | 48.8 |
| Shots | 15 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 9 |
| Corners | 2 | 5 |
| Passes | 438 | 421 |
| Fouls committed | 24 | 9 |
The most striking figure comes from the xG calculated after the fact based on the match's shots: Estoril generated 1.62 expected goals against Académico de Viseu's 0.768. In other words, the visitors created the more dangerous chances, with more shots on target (9 to 6) and more corners (5 to 2), but it was the home side that made the most of its opportunities to walk away with all three points.
That gap between chances created and goals scored stands in contrast to what had been projected before kickoff. In our preview, we gave Académico de Viseu a 43% chance of winning, a 28% chance of a draw, and a 29% chance of an away win, with expected goals of 1.52 for the home side and 1.2 for Estoril. The result ended up matching the edge we gave the home team, though the match itself, watched live, was considerably more even than those preview numbers suggested.
With this result, Académico de Viseu moves to 14 points through eight matches, with a record of 4 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Estoril, meanwhile, continues to struggle: the club sits on just 2 points from eight matches, with 0 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses, a 12-point gap behind the team that beat it today. These are two very different stories on the table, and this match, for all its balance on the field, ended up reflecting exactly that gap.
