André Clóvis nets a brace as Académico de Viseu stuns Estrela on the road

André Clóvis needed just nine minutes to tilt the game in his team's favor, and before the half hour mark he had already put it out of reach. Académico de Viseu came away with a clear 0-2 win at the Estádio Municipal de Rio Maior, in a Liga Portugal clash where the striker's double left Estrela empty handed despite controlling much of the possession.

The script was written early. In the 9th minute, Cihan Kahraman whipped in a corner and Clóvis rose to head home from close range to make it 0-1. Estrela had barely settled when, in the 23rd minute, Kahraman struck again, this time slipping a through ball for Clóvis, who finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 0-2. Two goals, one partnership, and a match that was effectively decided before halftime.

Plenty of control, but no reward

What stands out is that Estrela did not sit back. With Ianis Stoica, Lovro Zvonarek and Abraham Marcus causing trouble at times, the home side finished with more possession, more shots and more corners than their opponents. But they lacked precision: of their 16 shots, only two hit the target. Ianis Stoica, Santiago Serra and Leandro Antonetti all had clear chances that either sailed wide or were well dealt with by the visiting defense, while Académico de Viseu, with less overall control of the game, made the most of the moments that mattered.

That gap between volume and finishing shows up too in the post-match xG calculated from the game's shots: 1.20 for Estrela against 2.20 for Académico de Viseu. In other words, the visitors did not just win, they created the higher quality chances, something the big chances tally (three to one) also points to.

In the second half Estrela pushed with attacking substitutions (Beni Souza and Kevin Höög Jansson came on, with René Mitongo following later) and had their moments, like Kevin Höög Jansson's shot in the 82nd minute or Max Scholze's effort that grazed the crossbar in the 86th, but they never found the goal that would have added tension to the scoreline. Académico de Viseu, for their part, kept creating chances to extend the lead, with Mohamed Bouldini and Alejandro Mestanza on the field after Bruno Pinheiro's substitutions.

What the preview said versus what happened

Before kickoff, our projection gave Estrela a 42% chance of winning, with 31% for Académico de Viseu and 27% for a draw, and expected goals of 1.60 for the home side and 1.33 for the visitors. The outcome ended up being the exact opposite of what that forecast suggested as most likely: the favorite failed to score, while the side given fewer chances on paper settled the match with ruthless efficiency inside the first half hour.

The result leaves Académico de Viseu on 11 points and Estrela on 10, separated by just one point in a table where both sit in the middle of the pack. For Estrela, it's a bittersweet takeaway: they controlled the game, produced more shots and corners, but it was not enough against a rival that made the most of its two clear first half chances. For Académico de Viseu, Clóvis's clinical finishing and his understanding with Kahraman were enough to take all three points away from home.
