Bouldini strikes in stoppage time as Académico de Viseu edges Vitória Guimarães 2-1
Mohamed Bouldini's stoppage time goal decided a match in which Vitória Guimarães had the better chances but not the finishing touch.
The fourth official had already held up the board showing four minutes of stoppage time, but Académico de Viseu still had one more card to play. And they played it well: Mohamed Bouldini struck in the 92nd minute on a counterattack to seal a 2-1 win over Vitória Guimarães at the Estádio Municipal do Fontelo, in Liga Portugal action.
The match was tight on the scoreboard but lopsided in terms of play, with Vitória Guimarães carrying the greater attacking threat for much of the 90 minutes. The first half ended scoreless despite clear chances for the visitors, with efforts from Arnel Jakupovic and João Mendes failing to find the net.
A game decided in the final 40 minutes
Everything changed in the second half. In the 52nd minute, just seconds after André Clóvis had rattled the crossbar, Lorougnon Gohi pounced on a rebound from a counterattack to make it 1-0 with a low shot just inside the left post. Vitória Guimarães wasted no time responding: in the 66th minute, Gonçalo Nogueira, who had come on at halftime in place of Lohann Doucet, leveled the score with a shot from outside the box off an assist from Alan. The equalizer seemed to be steering the match toward a share of the points, with both sides creating chances down the stretch: Gustavo Silva rattled the post, and Alioune Ndoye came close to a second for the visitors with a shot that clipped the crossbar. But deep into stoppage time, Bouldini, who had just come on for André Clóvis, stepped up to finish with his right foot from the center of the box and make it a final 2-1 off another counterattack.
More chances, but less precision
The match statistics reflect Vitória Guimarães' dominance on the field, something that didn't translate to the scoreboard.
| Stat | Académico de Viseu | Vitória Guimarães |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 46.3 | 53.7 |
| Shots | 11 | 22 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 7 |
| Big chances | 1 | 3 |
| Corners | 4 | 8 |
| Passes | 356 | 401 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 11 |
Vitória Guimarães doubled up Académico de Viseu in shots and outdid them in clear-cut chances and corners, something also reflected in the xG estimated after the match: 2.452 for the visitors against 1.942 for the home side. Those numbers confirm that Vitória Guimarães generated more danger throughout the match, but that counts for little when the opponent shows up at just the right moments.
Before kickoff, our projection gave Académico de Viseu a 33% chance of victory, a 31% chance of a draw and 36% to Vitória Guimarães, with expected total goals of 2.36. The final result fell on the less likely side of that split, though the total number of goals (three) ended up close to what was projected.
What the result means in the standings
With this win, Académico de Viseu moves to 8 points through 6 matches, with a record of 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Vitória Guimarães, meanwhile, sit at 4 points after 6 rounds, with just 1 win, 1 draw and 4 losses. The gap between the two sides in the table now stands at 4 points, a margin Académico de Viseu managed to stretch with this result at home.
For Vitória Guimarães, the loss stings especially given how it unfolded: they controlled possession, created more chances and even fought back to level a match they were trailing, only to concede in the final gasp. For Académico de Viseu, on the other hand, it's proof that efficiency, even when it shows up in the last possible moment, still counts for points.
