Adama Traoré signs with Deportivo, set for reunion with Aubameyang at Riazor

The winger arrives from the Premier League with plenty of experience in European competition and will link back up with his former Barcelona teammate.

Deportivo de A Coruña continues to stock its roster with proven names, and this time the club went shopping in the Premier League. The Galician side announced on Wednesday the signing of Adama Traoré, who put pen to paper on a two-year deal running through June 2028. There's a nice subplot to the move too: at Riazor he'll be reunited with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with whom he shared a locker room at Barcelona during the second half of the 2021/22 season.

Adama, born in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and just turned 30, arrives with a resume built across much of English football. Last season he split his time between West Ham and Fulham, appearing in 24 Premier League matches and 4 FA Cup games. That's no small thing for a club that needs players who know their way around demanding competitions.

His history with Barcelona carries a certain sentimental weight. He came up through La Masía and made it all the way to a first-team debut, though his time in Blaugrana colors amounted to just 12 appearances, 11 of them during that six-month loan spell in 2022 that lined up perfectly with Aubameyang's own stint at the club. From there, his career took off in England, where he's worn the shirts of Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Wolverhampton, Fulham and West Ham.

The numbers back up the signing: 271 Premier League appearances, with 14 goals and 27 assists, plus European experience that includes one Champions League match and 16 in the Europa League, where he tallied 2 goals and 2 assists. With the Spanish national team he made 8 appearances and was part of the squad that reached the semifinals of Euro 2020, a detail that hasn't gone unnoticed in Galicia.

A profile that fits the project

The club highlighted the winger's track record as a key piece going forward. In its official statement, Deportivo noted that Adama brings "extensive international experience, time in one of Europe's top leagues, and a habit of competing on the most demanding stages."

Now the question on the minds of Deportivo fans is a simple one: how long will it take Adama to settle in at Riazor? His speed and knack for beating defenders are already well known in Spanish football, and his reunion with Aubameyang in the locker room promises a connection that fans already got a glimpse of, however briefly, at Camp Nou a little more than three years ago. Deportivo is making a bold bet on a duo that blends finishing and unpredictability, two ingredients any team fighting near the top of the table is happy to have.
