Real Madrid Has 89th-Minute Goal Wiped Out, Denied Win Over City
Pau Quesada lashed out at the referee after the 1-1 draw in Manchester and admitted he could have been sent off for his protests.
Some goals are worth three points, and some whistles wipe them off the map in a split second. That's exactly what happened to Real Madrid in Manchester: a goal in the 89th minute that would have meant a historic 2-1 win over City, ruled out before the ball had even finished crossing the line.
The play itself has a strange twist. Fullback Silvia Cristobal pushed the ball into the back of the net, but the referee had already blown her whistle moments earlier, ruling that Cristobal had collided with Beth Mead and prevented the English forward from challenging for the ball. Foul called, goal wiped off the board, and a 1-1 draw that held until the final whistle in the Women's Champions League.
The visiting bench didn't take it well at all. Real Madrid coach Pau Quesada protested so fiercely that he later admitted he could have ended up watching the rest of the match from the stands.
"I could have been sent off, given the way I protested. It was enough for them to throw me out," Quesada told ESPN.Pau Quesada
What was hardest for the Madrid coach to swallow wasn't so much the call itself, but the timing of it. For Quesada, the referee had the option to let play continue and review it afterward with VAR, instead of cutting the action short before it finished.
"It's hard for me to understand why she blew the whistle first. She could have waited for the goal and then let VAR step in. A lot of us put in long hours on this. You let the play finish, you go to VAR and review it. We need to progress and become more professional, so these things don't happen," Quesada explained to ESPN.Pau Quesada
The coach even suggested that the officiating crew itself had doubts about its own decision. "I think they had doubts. They knew they should have waited. Even they were surprised by the call, because otherwise they would have sent me off," he added.
A draw that leaves a bittersweet taste
With this result, Real Madrid sits on two points from two matches in the Champions League league phase, dead even with Manchester City in the standings. It's not a bad start, but the feeling is one of a missed opportunity, especially on such a demanding road trip.
For Quesada's side, the goal is to improve on the last two European campaigns, in which they were knocked out in the quarterfinals in both 2025 and 2026. A win in Manchester would have been an important step in that direction.
City, meanwhile, are living through an odd contrast in form. In the domestic league they're off to a nearly flawless start, with points to spare after four matchdays, but in Europe the story is different: they've now drawn two straight in the Champions League, a competition in which the English side, reigning WSL champions, are still searching for their best version.
