Alberto Gamero Returns to Millonarios to Replace Fabian Bustos
The coach from Santa Marta returns to lead the Bogota club following a brief and unconvincing stint at Deportivo Cali.
Some comebacks you can see coming, and others catch even the sharpest observers off guard. Alberto Gamero's return to Millonarios falls into the second group, especially considering that just eight months ago the club itself had shown him the door amid whistles and criticism. Now that same fan base is welcoming him back, this time as the emergency fix.
The Bogota club confirmed that the coach from Santa Marta is taking over the bench in place of Fabian Bustos, whose exit had been brewing for weeks due to widespread rejection of his style of play. Gamero arrives at a team sitting fifth in the Liga BetPlay with 11 points, a position that isn't bad on paper but never feels like enough at Millonarios without silverware to show for it.
A Goodbye That Wasn't Final
Gamero had left the position on December 31, 2024, amid a tense atmosphere fueled by insults from fans during the final months of his first stint. From there he moved quickly to Deportivo Cali, a brief eight month spell in which he managed 30 matches with a record of 8 wins, 9 draws and 13 losses, numbers that never fully won people over.
What stands out is that his name had been strongly linked to taking charge of two time defending champion Junior, a move that seemed all but set. But at the last moment things tipped toward Bogota, and the coach chose to return to the club where he built his most important legacy.
Talking about Gamero at Millonarios means talking about an entire era. His first spell was one of the longest tenures Colombian soccer has seen in recent memory: five years in charge of the squad, with a direct, vertical style that delivered three titles, the 2022 Copa Colombia, the 2023-I Liga BetPlay and the 2024 Superliga. Over that stretch he took charge of 277 matches, with 129 wins, 77 draws and 71 losses, a record that places him among the winningest coaches in the club's recent history.
Now the challenge is different. He isn't arriving to build a project from scratch, but to right a ship that had been drifting without clear direction. His debut already has a date: on the road against Pereira on Sunday, September 6, in matchday 10 of the tournament.
Is nostalgia enough to transform the team overnight? Probably not, but the front office chose the familiar over the uncertain. Gamero knows exactly what that locker room and that fan base demand, and that may be the biggest advantage he brings into this second chapter.
