Alverca Blitzes Nacional With Three Goals in Eight Decisive Minutes
The visitors scored three times between the 33rd and 41st minutes to settle a match in which Nacional controlled possession but lacked cutting edge.
It took just eight minutes for Alverca to put the game away. Between the 33rd and 41st minutes, the visitors struck three times at the Estadio da Madeira to seal a 1-3 scoreline that CD Nacional could only partly repair late on. The Liga Portugal once again sent the Madeira side home empty handed, even though the final score didn't quite capture how even the first half had actually been.
Nacional had actually started the brighter of the two sides, enjoying more possession and creating a couple of chances through Stavros Gavriel and Markus Jensen that failed to hit the target. But Alverca had the match well scouted and struck three times during the worst possible stretch for the home side. First it was Francisco Chissumba, who finished with his left foot from the center of the box in the 33rd minute after being set up by Chiquinho. Two minutes later, Dawda Camara rose to head home a Diogo Spencer cross and make it 0-2. Before Nacional could regroup, Camara struck again in the 41st minute, this time from close range with his right foot, once more assisted by Spencer, to put the game out of reach at 0-3 by halftime.
The second half slowed considerably, though Nacional tried to respond through substitutions: Matchoi Djalo and Song Min-Kyu came on at the break and added some much needed depth to the home attack. Chiheb Laabidi and Allen Obando also got minutes and created chances without finding the net, until the breakthrough finally came in the 80th minute. After an Obando header cannoned off the post, the rebound fell kindly for Matchoi Djalo, who tapped in from close range to make it a final 1-3. There was no time or energy left for anything more, though Nacional kept pumping crosses into the box through the five minutes of stoppage time.
By the numbers
Nacional controlled possession and generated more overall play, but Alverca was far more clinical when it mattered between the posts.
| Statistic | CD Nacional | Alverca |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 56.9 | 43.1 |
| Shots | 13 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 7 |
| Big chances | 3 | 2 |
| Passes | 474 | 360 |
| Fouls committed | 7 | 16 |
That gap between shots and shots on target tells much of the story: Nacional fired off more attempts, but Alverca turned seven of its ten shots into tests for the opposing goalkeeper, a conversion rate that ended up making all the difference. According to our post match xG estimate, calculated from shot locations, Nacional generated 2.53 expected goals to Alverca's 1.5, a gap that confirms the home side deserved, at least in terms of chances created, more than the final score suggested.
The pre-match odds had been fairly evenly split: 42% for a Nacional win, 30% for a draw and 28% for an Alverca victory, with expected goals of 1.39 for the home side and 1.08 for Alverca. The result ended up defying that forecast: the side that came in as favorite left with a lopsided scoreline against them, even if not in terms of chances created.
In the standings, the match pitted two teams separated by just 1 point against each other. Alverca arrived with 5 points from 6 games played (1 win, 2 draws and 3 losses), while Nacional had 4 points, also from 6 matches (1 win, 1 draw and 4 losses). With this result, Alverca pulls a bit further away from Nacional near the bottom of the table, in a zone where every point counts.
For Nacional, there's the lingering feeling of having created more than the scoreline shows, with Djalo standing out as a bright spot after his close range goal. For Alverca, Camara's finishing, with a brace to his name, along with the assists from Chissumba and Diogo Spencer, made the difference on an afternoon that was effectively decided in a quarter of an hour of first half action.
