Alverca thrashes Famalicão 4-1 despite just a third of possession
With just 35.5% possession, Alverca was ruthless on nearly every chance, beating Famalicão 1-4 even as the home side controlled the ball without ever threatening real danger.

Famalicão controlled the ball however it pleased, but Alverca walked away with all three points in a result far more emphatic than the scoreline might suggest: 1-4 at the Estádio Municipal 22 de Junho, with the visitors scoring in four separate moments despite holding barely a third of possession. It was one of those afternoons where having the ball counted for very little.
The script flipped early. In the 13th minute, Chiquinho curled a direct free kick with his right foot, low and inside the left post, for the 0-1. Famalicão answered before halftime: in the 38th minute, Victor Rofino met a point-blank header that flew into the top right corner off a corner kick cross from Marcos Peña, and the teams went into the break level at 1-1.
That is where the home side's hopes ended. In the second half, Alverca stepped on the gas and never let up. Figueiredo put his side back in front in the 55th minute with a low finish inside the left post after a through ball from Diogo Spencer. Eleven minutes after that 2-1, in the 76th minute, Vivaldo Semedo, on from the bench, finished with his left foot, also inside the left post, to make it 1-3. The game was sealed in the 84th minute with a penalty: Gil Dias fouled Diogo Spencer inside the box, and André Vidigal, also a second-half substitute, converted with his right foot for the final 1-4.
Plenty of ball, little danger
The numbers tell the story of a match with two completely different faces. Famalicão controlled 64.5% of possession and outpassed Alverca by a wide margin (540 to 301), but it was the visiting side that created the real danger: five shots on target to the home team's two, and four big chances against just one for the hosts.
| Stat | Famalicão | Alverca |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 64.5 | 35.5 |
| Shots | 13 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 2 | 5 |
| Big chances | 1 | 4 |
| Corners | 8 | 3 |
| Passes | 540 | 301 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 27 |
That gap in chance quality also shows up in the match's estimated xG, calculated after the fact based on shot locations: 0.60 for Famalicão against 3.13 for Alverca. A number that backs up what the scoreline showed: the visitors made far better use of every trip into the box.
The result also flew in the face of the pregame projections. Beforehand, the model gave Famalicão a 53% chance of winning, just 18% to Alverca and 29% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.56 for the home side and 0.82 for the visitors. None of that held up: Alverca not only won, it did so with four goals, completely flipping the forecast on its head.
What the standings look like now
In the league, Famalicão came into this match with a record of 1 win, 4 draws and 3 losses in 8 matches, while Alverca has 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses, also in 8 Liga Portugal appearances. The gap between the two sides in the standings is just 4 points, with Alverca in eighth place and Famalicão in thirteenth. This win lets Alverca stretch that distance, while Famalicão continues searching for the consistency it needs to climb the table.
In the end, it was clear that having the ball means nothing if it doesn't translate into clear chances. Alverca did more with less, and that difference, three goals in the final score, proved decisive at the Estádio Municipal 22 de Junho.
