Club América Advance to the Quarterfinals After Ruthlessly Efficient 2-0 Win Over Columbus Crew
Club América routed Columbus Crew at Dignity Health Sports Park on just two shots, while the visitors dominated play, missed a penalty and couldn't find a way back into it.

Club América beat Columbus Crew 2-0 at Dignity Health Sports Park to move confidently into the quarterfinal round, though the scoreline only tells half the story. Columbus were the team that saw more of the ball, took more shots and created more clear chances, but they ran into the América goal time and again, and to make matters worse, missed a penalty that could have changed everything.
The match opened with a pure counterattacking blow. In the 10th minute, Brian Rodríguez picked out Raphael Veiga on a quick transition, and the Brazilian finished left-footed, low and inside the post, to make it 1-0. That was one of the few times all half that América hurt Columbus with the ball, because from there Columbus took control of the territory: Cesar Ruvalcaba rattled the post with a shot in the 16th minute, and Brais Méndez tested Rodolfo Cota twice more between the 17th and 20th minutes, with the goalkeeper holding firm both times.
The turning point came in the 35th minute, when VAR reviewed a handball by Cristián Borja inside the area and awarded a penalty to Columbus Crew. It was the perfect chance to even out the scoreline to match the run of play, but Brais Méndez, who stepped up to take it, sent his shot wide of the right post in the 38th minute, squandering the clearest chance his team would get all night. Columbus kept pushing, with Josef Martínez and Malte Amundsen both getting looks before the break, but they went into the locker room behind despite generating more.
Then, right at the start of the second half, América struck again when it was least expected: in the 50th minute, Raphael Veiga returned the favor to Brian Rodríguez, who finished from inside the box to make it 2-0. Two shots, two goals: an efficiency that stood in sharp contrast to the visitors' fruitless persistence. Columbus tried their luck in the second half with André Gomes and substitute Gonzalo Tapia, but couldn't pull one back.
Numbers that reflect Columbus's uncomfortable dominance
The stat sheet confirms what was plain to see on the field: Columbus Crew were clearly superior in possession and overall volume of play, but lacked the finishing touch.
| Stat | Club América | Columbus Crew |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 37.9 | 62.1 |
| Shots | 14 | 16 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 8 |
| Big chances | 2 | 4 |
| Corners | 2 | 10 |
| Passes | 368 | 587 |
| Fouls committed | 9 | 10 |
The xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots backs up that reading too: 2.401 for Columbus against just 1.34 for América. In other words, based on the quality of the chances created, the visiting side deserved to score more than they did, and América won with less than what their rival produced.
The result also runs fairly counter to the projection we published ahead of the match, where we gave América a 52% chance of winning, 27% for a draw and 21% for Columbus, with expected goals of 1.7 for the home side and 1.02 for the visitors. América delivered the win, yes, but not in the dominant fashion those numbers suggested: this was a match in which Columbus played more and generated more, and still walked away empty handed.
In the end, América take away what matters most on the scoreboard: two goals born of pure killer instinct, one from Veiga and another from Rodríguez off a return assist between the two, and a defense that held firm despite ceding possession and corners. Columbus leave with the feeling of having deserved more, with the missed penalty as the moment that will linger longest, and with their quarterfinal hopes now complicated after this defeat at Dignity Health Sports Park.
