America dominates but settles for 1-1 draw with ten-man Tijuana

With 28 shots and 72.4% possession, America couldn't break down a Tijuana side that held on with ten men after Alejandro Gomez's 92nd-minute red card.

America dominates but settles for 1-1 draw with ten-man Tijuana

Club America ran into the same old problem once again: dominating without breaking through. At Estadio Banorte, Guillermo Almada's side racked up 28 shots and 72.4% possession, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Sebastian Abreu's Club Tijuana, which left the field with a point and a man down.

The match opened with a blow nobody in the stands saw coming. In the 11th minute, Elias Manoel showed up from outside the box and fired a low left-footed shot that slipped in by the left post, assisted by Alejandro Gomez, making it 0-1 for Tijuana. America, which had been pressing from the start, needed just seven minutes to respond: in the 18th minute, Miguel Borja poked home a low right-footed finish from the right side of the box, off a ball laid off by Isaias Violante following a corner kick, for the 1-1 that would end up being the final score.

What's striking is that the scoreline stayed frozen despite America's relentless pressure. Violante, Alexis Gutierrez, Alan Cervantes and Edwin Cerrillo tried again and again from outside the box and through the middle, but the visiting goalkeeper and a good dose of Tijuana luck kept the result intact through the entire second half. In the second half, with substitutions on both sides (Brian Rodriguez, Oscar Perea, Carlos Alvarez and Erick Sanchez all came on for the home side), the siege continued without reward: shots from Brian Rodriguez, Oscar Perea and Borja again crashed against Tijuana's resistance.

The closing stretch had an extra twist. In the 91st minute, VAR reviewed a possible red card for Alejandro Gomez and determined there was no sending-off. But a minute later, in the 92nd, Gomez himself was sent off for fighting, leaving the Xolos with ten men for the match's final gasp.

The numbers behind the hollow dominance

The stats confirm what was plain to see on the field: an America side that had the ball and the chances, but not the finishing touch needed to take home all three points.

The estimated xG drawn from the match's shots backs up that sense of a wasted opportunity: America generated 1.995 expected goals against just 0.488 for Tijuana. It's a measure of what happened on the field, not a prediction, but it makes clear the home side deserved considerably more than it got.

Before kickoff, our projection gave America a 57% chance of winning, against an 18% chance of a visitor's win and a 25% chance of a draw, with expected goals of 1.95 for the home side and 1.03 for Tijuana. The final result, with the draw that our model had pegged as the least likely of the three outcomes, ended up being exactly what happened: America generated even more than projected, but couldn't turn it into a win.

What the result means in the standings

In the Liga MX season so far, America came into this match as the leader with 28 points from 14 games (8 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses), while Tijuana sat in seventh place with 21 points (5 wins, 6 draws and 3 losses) in the same number of matches. The gap between the two sides before this draw was 7 points, a distance that today's result didn't dramatically change, though it did allow Tijuana to add another draw to its tally.

In the end, America is left with the feeling of having created more than enough to win, but without the goal it needed. Tijuana, for its part, takes a valuable point on the road, even if it also takes Alejandro Gomez's late red card, a sour note to close out an afternoon in which, against the run of play, it held on through nearly the entire second half with a draw that kept threatening to slip away shot after shot.
