América Facing Seven Matches in 20 Days Between Liga MX and Leagues Cup

A packed schedule that culminates with the clash against Tijuana and a possible Leagues Cup final on the very same day.

América Facing Seven Matches in 20 Days Between Liga MX and Leagues Cup

Seven matches in 20 days. That's how tight things could get for América if Guillermo Almada's squad stays alive on every front. The Eagles have already punched their ticket to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals, and that ticket comes with a prize that thrills fans but complicates life for the coaching staff: a schedule that will stretch the roster to its limits between Liga MX and the binational tournament.

It all kicks off this Sunday, when América hosts Atlético San Luis in Matchday 4 of the Apertura 2026. Nothing unusual there. The trouble starts with what comes next: a string of games that, in the best case scenario (meaning the Eagles keep winning and advancing), could run without a break all the way to September 5, the date set for the Leagues Cup final.

After facing San Luis, the blue and gold squad will have to travel to the border to take on FC Juárez in Matchday 5. Three days later, with no time to catch their breath, they'll dive straight into the Leagues Cup quarterfinals against the Columbus Crew, a match set for August 26. Sounds tight? The best part is still to come.

On August 29, América returns to Estadio Azteca to host Puebla in Matchday 6. And if the Leagues Cup dream is still alive, a possible semifinal would fall between September 1 and 2. In other words: almost no rest between games, with travel, changing weather, and a physical toll that no coaching staff wants to see piling up right at the start of a tournament.

The Real Headache: September 5

That's where the real knot lies. On that day, Matchday 7 of Liga MX against Tijuana and a possible Leagues Cup final are scheduled to collide on paper. Two matches, one single date. If América makes it to the tournament's decisive stage, they'll have no choice but to sit down and negotiate a date change for the match against Xolos, or else handle it with a split squad, something no coach wants to deal with two weeks before it happens.

To sum up how the road ahead looks: San Luis on August 16, Juárez on the 21st, Columbus Crew on the 26th, Puebla on the 29th, a possible semifinal between September 1 and 2, and the double header on September 5 against Tijuana and in the hypothetical final. Not bad as a reward for staying alive in two competitions at once, though Almada's coaching staff already knows that managing minutes and avoiding injuries will be just as important as the result of each match.
