America blitzes Atlas 0-4 in half an hour, survives late rally to win 5-2
Las Aguilas raced out to a 0-4 lead on goals from Borja, Sanchez, Rodriguez and Zendejas, and despite an Atlas comeback that included a penalty, they held on for a 2-5 win to stay atop Liga MX.

Four goals in 37 minutes, two of them scored just two minutes apart, were enough for Club America to put the game away before Atlas had a chance to respond. The final score at Estadio Jalisco read 2-5, though that line makes the match look closer than it actually was through the first hour: America raced out to a 0-4 lead before the home side salvaged some pride late on.
The Liga MX clash opened with Atlas creating the first chances through Ryan Mmaee, who tested the keeper with a header that lacked precision. But the game flipped on its head in a two-minute span Atlas is probably still trying to process: in the 25th minute, Miguel Borja finished with his right foot inside the box off a Brian Rodriguez assist, and just two minutes later, in the 27th, Erick Sanchez doubled the lead with a left-footed strike from inside the area. The first half ended 0-2 in favor of Las Aguilas, even though Atlas had been the team doing most of the pushing with the ball.
The rout is confirmed in the second half
If the first half left any doubt about whether Atlas could fight back, the second half erased it quickly. Brian Rodriguez, this time on the finishing end, made it 0-3 in the 57th minute with a shot from outside the box off a counterattack, and five minutes later Alex Zendejas chipped a left-footed effort into the top corner to make it 0-4. The match looked all but settled, with Atlas against the ropes.
That's when the night's only refereeing controversy arrived: in the 69th minute, VAR reviewed a handball by Santiago Bueno inside the box and awarded Atlas a penalty. Luis Esteves converted it with authority in the 72nd minute to make it 1-4, and just five minutes later, in the 77th, Mmaee himself struck from outside the box to make it 2-4 with a right-footed effort. Atlas dreamed for a moment of pulling off something remarkable, but America shut the door on any hope almost immediately: in the 78th minute, Kevin Alvarez finished from close range to make it a final 2-5.
What the numbers say
Atlas controlled possession and generated more overall volume, but couldn't turn that into clear-cut chances until the result was already decided.
| Stat | Atlas | Club America |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 56.4 | 43.6 |
| Shots | 23 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 6 |
| Big chances | 1 | 2 |
| Corners | 9 | 4 |
| Passes | 457 | 358 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 14 |
According to our expected goals estimate calculated from the match's shots, Atlas generated 2.215 and America 2.028, fairly even figures that confirm what the possession and shot numbers already suggested: the 2-5 scoreline was far more lopsided than the overall run of play ended up showing.
The pre-match projection had pointed to a tight contest, with 24% odds for Atlas, 27% for a draw and 49% for America, with an expected goals total of 2.75 for the match. The actual result blew well past that projection in terms of goals scored, and while an America win was the favored outcome, nobody saw a three-goal margin coming.
With the result, America stays atop the standings with 27 points from 12 matches played, while Atlas sits in sixth place with 21 points from 13 matches, six points behind tonight's opponent. For Atlas, Esteves' penalty and Mmaee's goal offer some consolation on a night when America, with goals from Borja, Sanchez, Rodriguez, Zendejas and Alvarez, made its case as the league's clear frontrunner.
