America and Cruz Azul play to scoreless draw, but debuts and returns steal the spotlight
Santiago Ramos and Santiago Bueno made their America debuts, Malagon returned after six months out with injury, and Orquin made his Cruz Azul debut against his former club.

Nobody left the stadium in San Diego talking about a moment to remember. The Clasico Joven between America and Cruz Azul ended scoreless, with both teams taking turns on the ball and playing it safe more than they pushed forward. But beyond the flat result, the match delivered something that actually matters looking ahead: debuts, returns and minutes for players the coaching staffs needed to see on the field.
Because even though the scoreboard never moved, the friendly did its job. It gave both coaching staffs a chance to test pieces that hadn't had a shot yet, and it also brought back playing time for players coming off injury. In that sense, the evening in California made more news on the individual sheets than in the collective performance.
Two Santiagos debut together at center back
After a couple of weeks training with the group, Santiago Ramos and Santiago Bueno finally got their debuts with the Eagles. Both center backs arrived in the middle of an adjustment process, dealing with the altitude as well as building physical chemistry with their new teammates, so this was no easy stage to start on.
There were, understandably, some communication hiccups typical of players lining up for the first time next to a new partner in the box. Even so, the center back pairing left a good impression in terms of individual quality, and everything suggests that with more minutes under their belts they can become an important duo for America's defense.
Malagon's return and a reunion with Orquin
Another storyline of the night was the return of Luis Angel Malagon to the first team. The goalkeeper was out for six months with an Achilles tendon injury, the same one that kept him out of the World Cup. In the few moments he had to come up big, Malagon answered the call and kept a clean sheet in his comeback appearance.
On the other side, the match also carried special meaning for Ralph Orquin, who made his Cruz Azul debut facing America, the club he left a few months ago after not renewing his contract while chasing a move to Europe. That dream never materialized, and the America academy product ended up staying in Mexico, now wearing the sky blue jersey against the team that developed him.
The action doesn't stop in California for either club. America will play again next Sunday, this time against Chivas in another edition of the Clasico Nacional. Cruz Azul, meanwhile, will face LA Galaxy that same Sunday, October 4, a match in which La Maquina will once again be able to count on Gabriel "Toro" Fernandez, who missed the game against America due to a stomach infection.
