Andrés Guardado Joins Rafael Márquez's Coaching Staff with Mexico

The former midfielder comes on board as second assistant on Márquez's staff heading into the 2026-2030 cycle.

Andrés Guardado Joins Rafael Márquez's Coaching Staff with Mexico

Andrés Guardado is hanging up his boots and putting on a coach's tracksuit, and not just anywhere: straight to the Mexican National Team bench. The "Principito" reached an agreement on Thursday with the Mexican Football Federation to join Rafael Márquez's coaching staff heading into the 2026-2030 cycle, according to sources who spoke with ESPN.

Guardado, 39, will come in as second assistant coach, one rung below Spaniard Vidal Paloma, who was announced weeks earlier as the first addition to Márquez's staff. The formal contract has yet to be signed, though the process is already well underway: the remaining details, related to the former midfielder's image rights, have been ironed out between the FMF's legal department and Guardado's own Spanish attorneys.

It makes sense that the Federation pushed to bring him in. Guardado played in five World Cups with El Tricolor, which places him among the most experienced Mexican players in the sport's biggest event, and that resume gives him a kind of authority few others in the locker room can claim. He doesn't arrive with just the prestige of a former player, either: he already got his feet wet coaching in the youth ranks at Real Betis in Seville, the club where he wrapped up his playing career. That combination, a recently retired player with international experience and some coaching background, is exactly what Márquez is looking for to build a bridge with the squad.

A Coaching Staff Still Taking Shape

The setup around Márquez is filling in piece by piece. Beyond Paloma and Guardado's imminent arrival, the staff includes Spanish fitness coach Pol Lorente, who returns after working in the previous cycle under Javier Aguirre, along with two other Spanish fitness trainers, Fran de Alva and Xavier Calvo.

The list isn't finalized yet, though. The FMF is still negotiating the possible addition of fellow Spaniard Juan Manuel Lillo as a third assistant coach, a more tactically minded piece that would add another dimension to the staff. At the same time, the Federation is exploring the arrival of Bernardo Cueva, a set-piece specialist currently working at Chelsea, and a goalkeeper coach, a role for which Alfredo Talavera is the name being floated for now, though if that option doesn't pan out the Federation isn't ruling out looking at English soccer for a candidate.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon and Mexico as one of the three host countries, every appointment to the coaching staff is being scrutinized closely. Guardado's arrival, still unsigned but essentially a done deal, aims to reinforce exactly what's often hardest to build from the outside: instant trust with a group of players who were watching him compete on the field until very recently.
