Argentinos Juniors strikes in Banfield, stays atop Group B

A goal from Matias Gimenez in the 65th minute, assisted by Gaston Veron, gave Argentinos Juniors a 1-0 win at Florencio Sola and cemented its place at the top of Group B.

Argentinos Juniors strikes in Banfield, stays atop Group B

A left-footed strike from the center of the box, right into the top corner, was all Argentinos Juniors needed to take the three points from Florencio Sola. Matias Gimenez finished it off in the 65th minute off a pass from Gaston Veron, and that set the final score: Banfield 0, Argentinos Juniors 1, in the Argentina Primera Division.

The result is less surprising once you look at how the match actually played out. Argentinos Juniors controlled the ball for nearly the entire game (67.4 percent possession to Banfield's 32.6 percent) and created the clearer chances at the opposite end. The first half was a string of opportunities for the visitors: Franco Vazquez tried a header in the 9th minute, Tomas Molina tested the home defense in the 10th, and between corner kicks and shots from outside the box from Gaston Veron, Kevin Gutierrez and Diego Porcel, Banfield's goal was under constant pressure. Still, neither Molina's close-range effort in the 39th minute nor Diego Porcel's left-footed shot in the 28th found the net. Banfield, for its part, defended with everything it had and occasionally pushed forward through Tomas Adoryan and David Zalazar, who tried his luck three times in the first half without seriously troubling the Argentinos goal.

The second half opened with Banfield a bit more lively: Zalazar kept probing down the left and Lautaro Gomez had a clear chance in the 49th minute, but the goal would come from the visitors. After Gimenez came on for Molina in the 56th minute, the substitution gave fresh life to Argentinos' attack, and nine minutes later it paid off: Veron's pass, Gimenez's angled finish, and the 0-1 that would hold up as the final score.

Banfield tried to respond late on with substitutions from Pedro Troglio, who brought on Lisandro Pinero, Matias Hernandez, Santiago Lopez Garcia and Nacho Pais looking for a reaction, but the home side managed just one shot on target in the entire match. Nicolas Diez, on the Argentinos side, managed the lead with the introductions of Kevin Coronel, Erik Godoy and Facundo Jainikoski to shut down space. The match ended with four yellow cards shown (Gaston Veron, Franco Paredes, Francisco Alvarez, Sebastian Prieto and Nacho Pais) in a closing stretch with more fouls than football.

What the numbers say

The gap between the two sides showed up clearly in the final stats:

StatBanfieldArgentinos Juniors
Possession (%)32.667.4
Shots1413
Shots on target15
Big chances-3
Corners36
Passes281599
Fouls committed138

Banfield put up more shots overall, but most missed the target: only one ended up between the posts, compared to five for the visitors. The estimated post-match xG backs up that impression: 0.81 for Banfield versus 1.87 for Argentinos Juniors, a gap that confirms Nicolas Diez's side created the clearer chances.

Heading into the match, our projections had given Argentinos Juniors a 46 percent chance of winning, against 23 percent for Banfield and 31 percent for a draw, with expected goals of 1.38 for the visitors and 0.91 for the home side. The final result matched that forecast: the favorite won, though by a narrower margin (1-0) than the combined total of 2.29 goals we had projected for the match.

In the Group B standings, the win puts Argentinos Juniors in first place with 25 points, built on 7 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses in 13 matches. Banfield, meanwhile, remains stuck in the lower half of the table with 13 points (3 wins, 4 draws and 6 losses in 13 games), 12 points behind its latest opponent. A match that confirmed, number by number, the gap that currently separates the two teams in the standings.
