Aston Villa beats Coventry 3-1 to advance in the English League Cup

Frank Lampard allowed himself to dream of a good result against one of the Premier League's heavyweights, but the night ended up being yet another reminder of the gap in class between the two bottom sides in the domestic table. Aston Villa won 3-1 on the road against Coventry City to reach the round of 16 of the 2026/2027 English League Cup, where Bournemouth is already waiting.

The stat speaks for itself: Coventry and Aston Villa are, right now, the two most battered teams in this young Premier League season. Lampard's side lost all four of their matches and sit at the bottom of the table, while Emery's men have just one point after losing three of their four league games. Neither side arrived in good form, but only one of them managed to rise above it.

The start was a statement of intent from the visitors. In the 7th minute, George Hemmings set up Tammy Abraham from the left, and the striker slipped between the rival center backs and finished low to the near post for the 1-0. Coventry, however, did not fall behind for long and hit back quickly: twenty minutes later, Denmark's Victor Torp leveled the score with a stunning free kick that curled into the top corner, leaving Aston Villa's goalkeeper with no chance.

The equalizer did not last long. The visitors struck again to retake the lead, this time through a Ross Barkley header, who rose highest in the box off a corner delivered from the left. With the score at 2-1, the match tilted firmly in Emery's favor.

In the second half, in the 14th minute, Villa put the game to bed. Tammy Abraham scored again, this time from close range, tapping the ball into an empty net after Coventry's defense failed to clear a corner kick taken by John McGinn from the right. The final 3-1 scoreline reflected a dominance that was evident for much of the match.

On Aston Villa's side, two names stood out for their absence from the starting lineup: Argentines Emiliano Buendia and Alejandro Garnacho were not in the starting eleven. Buendia did get some minutes, coming on with half an hour left to replace Senegal's Ibrahim Mbaye.

With this result, Aston Villa put aside, at least for one night, the difficult run they are enduring in the Premier League and move forward in a competition where they will now face Bournemouth for a spot in the quarterfinals. Coventry, meanwhile, is still searching for a way to turn around a start to the season that, for now, looks nothing like the historic rise Lampard has led since taking charge of the club in October 2024.
