Atlanta United strikes once, stuns dominant Portland Timbers 1-0

A 27th-minute strike from Miranchuk was all Atlanta United needed to beat a Portland side that controlled possession, fired 21 shots and racked up 2.47 expected goals, yet couldn't find the net.

Atlanta United strikes once, stuns dominant Portland Timbers 1-0

Portland controlled the ball, created chance after chance, and still walked out of Providence Park empty-handed. Atlanta United took home all three points with a single moment of quality: a 27th-minute finish from Aleksey Miranchuk that was enough to win 1-0 in an MLS match where the scoreline left the Timbers feeling like they'd done almost everything but the one thing that mattered.

The opening stretch made it clear this game would follow its own script. Before the goal, Portland had already served notice through Cole Bassett and Kristoffer Velde, who tested the Atlanta goal three times in the first ten minutes without success. Atlanta also had an early warning shot of its own, with Breel Embolo forcing a good save from the home goalkeeper in the 3rd minute. Gerardo Martino's side bided its time and made the most of its chance: on a play inside the box, Miranchuk struck a left-footed shot from the center of the area and placed it low, just inside the left post, for the 1-0 that would hold up as the final score.

What followed was a Portland monologue without a payoff. Velde kept coming, missing or having shots blocked in the 30th, 34th and 39th minutes, and Ariel Lassiter rattled the crossbar with a direct free kick in the 65th. Into the second half, Diego Chara and David da Costa also had their tries, and the introduction of Vincent Janssen gave the Timbers another target man up top, one who nearly headed home an equalizer in stoppage time, in the 92nd minute, without luck. Atlanta, for its part, spent the rest of the match holding on and looking for a second through Embolo and Miguel Almiron, who also had their looks, all of them turned away by the visiting goalkeeper.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Portland's edge in possession and scoring chances shows up clearly in the stat sheet, even if it never showed up on the scoreboard.

The shot count, 21 to 10, tells the story of the match pretty well: Portland attacked more, pushed harder, but couldn't find the finish. That's backed up by the xG figures calculated from shot locations, an in-house post-match estimate rather than a prediction: the Timbers generated 2.47 expected goals against Atlanta's 0.62. In other words, by that measure Portland deserved a good deal more than it got, while Atlanta converted with an efficiency its underlying numbers don't reflect.

That gap also stands in contrast to the pregame outlook. Beforehand, Portland had been given a 55% chance to win, compared to 22% for Atlanta and 23% for a draw, with expected goals projected at 2.09 for the home side and 1.28 for the visitors. The result went the opposite way from that forecast: the team with fewer expected chances walked away with the win.

The victory helps Atlanta United add to its total near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, where it came into the match with 26 points from 26 games played, the product of 7 wins, 5 draws and 14 losses. Portland, meanwhile, is left with the frustration of failing to convert a clear on-field advantage, more possession, more shots, more corners, into anything on the scoreboard, without the goal that might have at least salvaged a point.
