Atlanta United and New York City FC Trade Blows in 2-2 MLS Draw
An early own goal kicked off a back-and-forth battle that Atlanta United and New York City FC ended up splitting 2-2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

An own goal in the fourth minute set the tone for a match that ended up being the exact opposite of what it seemed to promise: not a quiet, low-scoring script, but a four-goal back-and-forth. Atlanta United and New York City FC drew 2-2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in an MLS clash that was decided goal by goal all the way into the second half.
The mistake came almost immediately: in just the 4th minute, Matt Edwards turned the ball into his own net to make it 0-1 for New York City FC, with the visitors barely having to work for it. Atlanta didn't take long to respond. Five minutes later, off a corner kick, Giuliano Galoppo struck a close-range shot with his left foot to make it 1-1, assisted by Tomás Jacob. That's how the teams went into halftime, after a choppy first half full of fouls and few clear chances beyond those two moments.
The second half opens up, then closes again
New York City FC struck again in the second half. In the 55th minute, Andrés Perea finished with his right foot from the center of the box, close to the left post, off a cross from Agustín Ojeda, making it 1-2. It looked like the visitors were on their way to a win, but Atlanta United leveled things again as the match entered its final stretch. In the 73rd minute, Jay Fortune, who had come on just a few minutes earlier in place of Cooper Sanchez, finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it a final 2-2, assisted by Tristan Muyumba.
Stoppage time brought no further scares on the scoreboard, though it did bring a tough break for Atlanta: Daniel Chica had to leave the field injured in the 90th minute with the home side having no substitutions left, forcing them to effectively finish the match a man down.
Even numbers for an even result
The stats paint a pretty accurate picture of what played out on the field: a match with no clear dominant side.
| Stat | Atlanta United | New York City FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 51 | 49 |
| Shots | 7 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 3 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 4 | 3 |
| Passes | 503 | 475 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 14 |
According to our xG estimate calculated after the fact based on the match's shots, New York City FC generated 0.881 and Atlanta United 0.80, figures that confirm just how tight the contest was, even though it was the home side that put more shots on target.
The result is quite a bit different from what our preview projected: our model gave New York City FC a 41% chance of winning, 30% for a draw, and just 29% for Atlanta United, with an expected total of 2.49 goals. The draw ended up winning out, and the final four-goal scoreline exceeded that combined projection.
What the result means in the standings
In the MLS Eastern Conference, splitting the points doesn't change the picture much for either side. New York City FC moves to 33 points from 27 matches played, with 8 wins, 9 draws and 10 losses, while Atlanta United sits at 27 points, also from 27 matches, with a record of 7 wins, 6 draws and 14 losses. The gap between the two in the standings is 6 points, a margin this draw doesn't meaningfully change: neither team picks up enough to make a significant jump, but neither loses decisive ground either. It was a match of mistakes, partial comebacks and a wide-open finish that, in the end, had no winner.
