Atlante dominates, misses late penalty, and falls 0-1 to Atletico San Luis

Atlante went into halftime scoreless after generating more than enough to win the game, and ended up losing 0-1 to Atletico San Luis. The blow came at the worst possible time for the home side: in the 58th minute, Benjamin Galdames connected on a right-footed strike from inside the box that found the top corner, assisted by Felipe Mora. He had only come on for Anderson Duarte a minute earlier, and that was all it took to decide the match at Estadio Banorte.

The most painful part for Atlante came in stoppage time. In the 89th minute, Nico Carrera went down in the box after a foul by Gibran Lajud, and the referee pointed to the spot. The call was confirmed by VAR in the 90th minute. But Walter Clar missed the chance: his first attempt was saved next to the right post, and on the rebound from a follow-up foul he smashed the ball off the crossbar. The equalizer that would have been fair given how the game played out slipped away on the final play.

A dominance that wasn't enough

The match carried an obvious paradox: Atlante racked up 21 shots to just 7 from Atletico San Luis, yet it was the visiting side that walked away with all three points. Our expected goals estimate based on the match's shots backs up that impression: Atlante generated 2.355 expected goals compared to just 0.424 for Atletico San Luis, a gap that never showed up on the scoreboard.

Already in the first half, Atlante had given plenty of warning signs: Walter Portales, Luis Puente, Luis Calzadilla and Martin Sarrafiore tested their aim from inside and outside the box without finding the net, while Atletico San Luis answered with attempts from Rafa Llorente, David Rodriguez and Felipe Mora that also missed the target. The scoreless draw at the break already hinted that the game would be decided more by finishing than by possession, something that was fully confirmed in the second half.

Before kickoff, our projection gave Atlante a 37% chance of winning, 28% to a draw, and 35% to Atletico San Luis, with an almost even expected goals split (1.41 for the home side and 1.40 for the visitors). What actually happened contradicted that reading: the team with the lower projected odds of winning was exactly the one that did, and it did so despite being heavily outshot and outcornered.

The match also produced yellow cards for Aaron Quiros, Robson Bambu, Eugenio Pizzuto and Martin Fernandez, along with several injury stoppages that broke up the rhythm, especially in the closing minutes of the first half.

What the result leaves behind

With this setback, Atlante sits on 14 points from 14 games played in Liga MX, while Atletico San Luis climbs to 19 points from 14 matches, a gap of 5 points between the two sides in the standings. For the team led by Miguel Herrera, the match stands as proof that creating chances isn't always enough; for Diego Mejia's Atletico San Luis, it was an afternoon of pure efficiency: with less than a third of their rival's shots, they took home all three points and, with a bit of luck, survived the penalty that could have cost them the draw in the final play.
