Atletico Madrid score inside ten minutes, hold off Manchester United to win 2-0
A lightning goal from Pablo Barrios and another from Ademola Lookman, with United finishing with ten men after Leny Yoro's red card, give Atletico Madrid the win in the Champions League.

It took less than 20 seconds for the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to erupt. Pablo Barrios finished from the center of the box, with his right foot and down the middle, off an assist from Alex Baena, and the scoreboard already read 1-0 before the match had any history of its own. That's how it ended too: Atletico Madrid 2, Manchester United 0, in the Champions League, with a second goal from Ademola Lookman late on and a red card that left the English side down to ten men for nearly twenty minutes.
United, far from falling apart after the early blow, answered with an uncomfortable opening half hour for Atletico. Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford had their chances, Carlos Baleba tested the keeper with a header from point blank range, and Michael Carrick's side generated more attacking volume than the final score would suggest. On the home side, Alejandro Grimaldo rattled the crossbar with a direct free kick in the 26th minute, and Julian Alvarez, minutes later, sent a shot just over the bar. The closing stretch of the first half brought the most confusing moment of the night: a goal from Johnny Cardoso that went up on the scoreboard before VAR stepped in and ruled it out, leaving Barrios's opener as the only goal of the half.
The decisive stretch
In the second half, Julian Alvarez again came close to doubling the lead with a shot that hit the left post, and United pushed down the right flank through Bruno Fernandes, who also struck the crossbar around the 69th minute. The match tilted decisively in the 73rd minute, when Leny Yoro saw red, after VAR had reviewed and overturned an earlier red card shown to the same defender in the 71st minute: two refereeing decisions within a few minutes of each other that ultimately left Manchester United with ten men. With plenty of space to exploit, Atletico settled the match in the 78th minute: a counterattack that Jonathan David tried to finish first before Ademola Lookman, with his right foot, slotted it home from close range along the ground, just inside the left post, for the final 2-0.
What the numbers say
Atletico controlled the ball for longer, but United didn't come up short on clear chances, a reflection of a tighter game than the scoreline suggests.
| Stat | Atletico Madrid | Manchester United |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 57.8 | 42.2 |
| Shots | 11 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 4 |
| Big chances | 1 | 4 |
| Corners | 2 | 5 |
| Passes | 652 | 466 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 13 |
That big chances count, four for United against just one for Atletico, explains why, according to our own xG estimate calculated from the shots in the match, the gap between the two sides was minimal: 1.63 for Atletico versus 1.45 for United. A match tighter on the pitch than the final score suggests, ultimately decided by efficiency in both boxes and by the red card that changed the complexion of the second half.
Beforehand, our projection gave Atletico Madrid a 42 percent chance of winning, 26 percent for a draw and 32 percent for Manchester United, with expected goals of 1.73 for the home side and 1.51 for the visitors on a total of 3.24. The final result came in lower on goals than that projected total, but consistent with the edge we had already given Atletico before kickoff.
What the match leaves behind
With this result, Atletico Madrid moves to 3 points in the Champions League, with one win and one loss from two matches played, while Manchester United stays level on the same points tally and the same record of one win and one loss. Both clubs currently sit in the middle of the overall table, though with just two matches played any reading of the standings remains provisional. What is clear after tonight in Madrid is the picture it leaves behind: an explosive start, VAR playing a leading role at both ends, and an Atletico side that knew how to use its numerical advantage to close out the game at just the right moment.
