Atlético Nacional tops América de Cali 3-1 in Miami behind goals from Cardona and Poveda

Four goals in twenty minutes. That's how fast things were decided in Miami, where Atlético Nacional beat América de Cali 3-1 in an international friendly that came out firing on all cylinders before settling down, as if both teams had used up all their gunpowder in the first half.

Before getting into the match itself, it's worth mentioning something that gives the game added weight: part of the proceeds went to victims of the earthquake that shook western Colombia on August 10. A friendly, yes, but with a purpose that goes beyond the final score.

A first half with no time to breathe

The match wasted no time getting going. In the 4th minute, Edwin Cardona pounced on a mistake in América's buildup and unleashed a shot from distance, just outside the box, that snuck past the goalkeeper. An early goal put Nacional in front.

América didn't back down and answered almost immediately with the kind of play that gets replayed over and over on your phone. Venezuelan forward Jhon Murillo finished with a backheel, showing serious class, off a pass from Quiñones. A stunning goal that left half the stadium frozen.

The celebration didn't last long. Nacional struck right back through Poveda, who capped a fine team move from the Verdolagas to restore the lead for the Antioquia side. In barely twenty minutes, three of the match's four goals had already gone in.

Cardona's brace seals it

Nacional's third goal came from the penalty spot. Rengifo played a long ball for Alfredo Morelos, who won the race to it and burst into the box at speed. Goalkeeper Fernandes couldn't avoid the contact and brought him down inside the area, and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Cardona stepped up again and made no mistake, completing his brace to make it a final 3-1.

With the result already in hand, Atlético Nacional managed the rest of the match without any real scares, while América de Cali tried, unsuccessfully, to close the gap in the second half.

Beyond the scoreline, the night in Miami left an image that will probably be remembered longer than any statistic: two Colombian giants, far from home, also playing for a charitable cause. Soccer, once again, serving as a bridge between fans and those who need it most.
