Augsburg holds firm to frustrate Bayern in a 2-2 thriller despite 30 shots

Ten seconds. That's all it took Robin Fellhauer to send a jolt through the WWK ARENA with a right-footed strike from the center of the box that found the middle of the net. Bayern Munich, heavy favorites coming in, ended up salvaging a 2-2 draw against FC Augsburg in a Bundesliga match that had everything: a goal wiped out by VAR, a crossbar, a post and a stubborn home side that held on until stoppage time.

The script seemed written for Bayern. The visitors dominated possession, created chance after chance and even thought they'd found the opener in the 50th minute, when Luis Diaz put the ball in the net only for VAR to chalk it off. But the scoreboard still favored Augsburg, who defended their slim lead from Fellhauer's early strike with discipline.

The equalizer came four minutes after the disallowed goal: in the 54th minute, Ismael Saibari struck a low right-footed shot from the center of the box, finding the inside of the left post, after an assist from Harry Kane. It looked like Bayern had finally found their footing, but Augsburg answered almost immediately. In the 63rd minute, Rodrigo Ribeiro finished with his left foot from the center of the box to put the hosts back in front, 2-1.

The late equalizer

Bayern kept pushing without reward: Kane rattled the crossbar before halftime, Serge Gnabry hit the right post in the second half, and Michael Olise tried his luck repeatedly from outside the box. The breakthrough finally came in the 79th minute, when Nathaniel Brown, on from the bench, finished from close range with his left foot off a Harry Kane cross to make it 2-2, the final score.

No more goals followed, though both sides had chances in stoppage time, which stretched to the 98th minute. Augsburg weathered the late waves and walked away with a point that, given the visitors' dominance, felt almost like a win.

Dominance that didn't translate into enough goals

The match stats reflect the gap in output between the two sides, even if they don't tell the story of the final result:

Bayern tripled Augsburg's shot count and racked up five big chances to the home side's one. That gap also shows up in the xG calculated after the fact based on shot locations: 5.744 for Bayern against 1.953 for Augsburg. It's a measure of what was generated on the field, not a prediction, but it confirms that Vincent Kompany's side deserved considerably more than they came away with.

In fact, the result is a far cry from our pre-match projections: our model gave Bayern a 75% chance of winning, with just 9% for Augsburg and 16% for a draw, with expected goals of 2.77 for the visitors and only 0.94 for the hosts. Augsburg didn't just avoid defeat, they actually took the lead twice.

What the result means in the standings

With the draw, Bayern Munich now have 11 points from 5 matches (3 wins, 2 draws, 0 losses) and remain in second place in the Bundesliga, just 3 points off the top. Augsburg, meanwhile, move to 8 points from 5 matches (2 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss) and sit in fifth place, that same 3-point gap separating them from Bayern.

For Manuel Baum and his squad, the point is proof they can hang with the big clubs even while getting outplayed in possession and shots. For Kompany, the challenge remains turning all that pressure into goals: Bayern left the WWK ARENA having given up two points that, judging by the sheer volume of chances created, looked destined to stay in Munich.
