Auxerre Grinds Out Win Over Nice at the Abbé-Deschamps

Cameron Archer popped up on the right side of the box, fired a low shot toward the center of the goal off a through ball from Christ Makosso, and gave Auxerre a 1-0 win over Nice at the Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps. It was the only goal of a match that Nice controlled in terms of the ball, but couldn't solve where it mattered most.

The number that jumps out is possession: Nice held onto the ball 68.5% of the time against just 31.5% for Auxerre, and also moved it around far more, completing 643 passes to Auxerre's 295. But soccer isn't won with the ball at your feet, it's won by putting the ball in the net, and there Auxerre was sharper: 7 shots on target compared to 4 for Nice, out of 11 and 12 total attempts respectively.

A Scoreless First Half With Warning Signs

From early on, Auxerre made it clear they weren't going to sit back. In the 10th minute, Danny Namaso tried twice in quick succession, first with a shot that was blocked and then with one that sailed high off a cross from Fredrik Oppegård. Shortly after, in the 14th minute, Axel Tuanzebe came close following a corner kick. Nice answered through Axel Witsel and Jonathan Clauss, both trying their luck from outside the box, but without finding the target. With chances at both ends, the first half ended scoreless.

The second half followed much the same script: Nice kept pushing down the flanks with Clauss and Gauthier Hein, and had a spell between the 58th and 60th minutes with shots from Djibril Coulibaly, Witsel and Mohammed Amoura that failed to test the goal. Auxerre, meanwhile, kept waiting for its chance, with Rémy Labeau Lascary trying his luck from inside the area.

The Goal That Broke the Deadlock

Archer settled it in the 73rd minute, latching onto a through ball from Makosso to finish with his right foot and make it 1-0. Nice responded with a wave of substitutions (Sofiane Diop, Nathan Ngoumou, Hicham Boudaoui and Isak Jansson all came on around the same time) and attempts from Elye Wahi and Xavier Mandza, but couldn't find an equalizer. Auxerre, with Romain Faivre and Naouirou Ahamada already on the field, managed to hold onto the lead until the final whistle.

The expected goals figures calculated after the fact based on the match's shots back up what was seen on the field: Auxerre generated 1.60 xG against just 0.63 for Nice, a gap that confirms the home side, despite seeing far less of the ball, was the more dangerous team near the opposing goal.

The result also runs against much of what was projected before kickoff. Our preview gave a 41% probability of a home win, 30% for a draw and 29% for an away win, with combined expected goals of 2.47 (1.37 for Auxerre and 1.10 for Nice). In the end there was just one goal in the entire match, and while a home win was the most likely outcome according to that forecast, the final 1-0 scoreline was considerably tighter than the average number of goals that had been anticipated.

In the standings, this win leaves Auxerre with 3 points from 4 matches (one win and three losses), in 13th place, while Nice sits on 2 points with two draws and two losses, in 18th place. The gap between the two sides in the table is just a single point, a margin that makes clear neither club has started the Ligue 1 season the way it hoped, and this result carries different weight for each: for Auxerre it's a breath of fresh air, for Nice, another missed opportunity despite having held the ball for nearly the entire match.
