With less possession but sharper finishing, Azerbaijan beat Lithuania 1-0 in the Nations League thanks to a goal from Abdulla Xaybulayev, moving into first place in Group D2.

Azerbaijan stuns Lithuania to grab top spot in Group D2

Azerbaijan won the battle that mattered despite losing the possession fight to Lithuania, taking the three points 1-0 in a Group D2 clash of the UEFA Nations League played at Palms Sports Arena. The lone goal came from Abdulla Xaybulayev in the 24th minute, and it was enough for a side that saw far less of the ball but knew exactly when to strike.

The most striking number from the match is that very contrast: Lithuania controlled 61.9% of possession to Azerbaijan's 38.1%, and strung together nearly twice as many passes, 518 to 326. But soccer isn't won with the ball alone, and Azerbaijan was far more clinical when it counted, finishing with 7 shots on target to Lithuania's 3, even though the overall shot count was level at 13 apiece.

How the goal came together

The move that produced the 1-0 came with a warning shot beforehand. A minute earlier, Oruc Mammadov had already tested the Lithuanian goal with a close-range header off a cross from Rufat Abbasov that went just wide. Azerbaijan kept pressing down that flank, and in the 24th minute the breakthrough arrived: Abdulla Xaybulayev finished with his right foot from close range, placing it down the middle, after being set up by Toral Bayramov. The goal needed a VAR review before it was confirmed.

Before that sequence there was little beyond fouls traded on both sides and the odd long-range effort, like Oruc Mammadov's shot in the 16th minute that the Lithuanian goalkeeper saved low to his left. Lithuania responded with attempts from Vykintas Slivka and Edgaras Utkus, neither of them particularly threatening, and the first half closed with the home side's narrow lead intact.

The second half brought a moment that could have changed everything: in the 52nd minute, VAR reviewed a possible red card for Abdulla Xaybulayev and ruled it unnecessary, so the goalscorer stayed on the field. Lithuania tried to push forward, but it was actually Azerbaijan who kept creating chances through Mahir Emreli, who headed a chance wide in the 55th minute and fired from outside the box in the 74th, neither attempt finding the target. Lithuania searched for an equalizer with late chances from Armandas Kucys, Gvidas Gineitis and Eligijus Jankauskas, but none of their shots found the net, and the match moved into six minutes of stoppage time with the scoreline unchanged.

According to our expected goals estimate, calculated from the match's shots, Azerbaijan generated 1.8 xG to Lithuania's 1.598, a gap that backs up the home side's effectiveness in front of goal, regardless of who held the ball.

It's worth comparing this to our pre-match projection: we gave Lithuania a 44% chance of winning, against just 24% for Azerbaijan, with a draw at 32%. The result ran exactly opposite to what the favorite needed, and it also fell well short of the pre-match expected goals total of 2.17, which had favored the visitors at 1.28 to 0.89.

What it means in the standings

With this result, Azerbaijan moved to 5 points from 3 matches played in Group D2, with a record of 1 win and 2 draws, no losses. Lithuania stayed on 4 points, also from 3 matches played (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss), leaving just 1 point between the two sides in the table. Liechtenstein, the group's third team, did not play on this matchday. With the two main contenders so close together, every point in this group carries weight, and this time it's Azerbaijan that walks away with the one that mattered most.
