Bakambu's 95th-Minute Penalty Rescues 2-2 Draw for San Diego Against Seattle
San Diego came back from two goals down and, with a Bakambu penalty in stoppage time, salvaged a 2-2 draw against Seattle Sounders FC in MLS.

Cedric Bakambu needed until the 95th minute, with the stadium already calling for the final whistle, to convert a penalty and seal the 2-2 between San Diego and Seattle Sounders FC at Snapdragon Stadium. The result capped off a wild match in which San Diego found itself down two goals before the 55th minute and ended up snatching a point at the very last gasp, from the penalty spot and deep into stoppage time.
The clash was part of the MLS season and, looking at the Western Conference table, both sides arrived with different needs: Seattle sat seventh with 43 points and San Diego twelfth with 35, an 8-point gap between them. None of that showed, though, in a stuck first half with no goals, which ended 0-0 even as San Diego was already controlling possession comfortably.
A Second-Half Start That Changed Everything
The story of the match was written in barely ten minutes after the break. In the 49th minute, Dejan Joveljic popped up from outside the box and finished with his left foot, low and inside the post, for the 0-1. Five minutes later, in the 54th minute, Sebastian Gomez doubled the lead with a left-footed strike from the center of the box off an assist from Hassani Dotson: 0-2, with Seattle seemingly having the match in hand.
But San Diego answered immediately. Just two minutes later came a penalty for a foul by Alex Roldan inside the area, confirmed after a VAR review. Anders Dreyer stepped up and missed the shot, but the rebound fell to Bakambu, who made no mistake, finishing low inside the left post to make it 1-2 in the 59th minute.
The home side pushed for the rest of the match in search of the equalizer, and found it in the most dramatic way possible. In the eighth minute of stoppage time, extended by a lengthy review, Stuart Hawkins committed a penalty on Marcus Ingvartsen inside the box. Bakambu, this time without missing, finished with his right foot toward the right side of the goal to make it a final 2-2 in the 95th minute.
The Numbers Behind a Dominance That Wasn't Enough
San Diego had the edge in possession and passing, but couldn't translate that superiority into a favorable scoreline until stoppage time.
| Stat | San Diego | Seattle Sounders FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 58.6 | 41.4 |
| Shots | 13 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 3 |
| Corners | 5 | 3 |
| Passes | 713 | 514 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 12 |
The post-match xG estimate, calculated from shot locations, backs up that impression too: San Diego generated 3.319 expected goals to Seattle's mere 1.097, a wide gap that nonetheless wasn't reflected on the scoreboard until Bakambu's final act.
The pre-match odds had split the chances fairly evenly: our projection gave San Diego a 39% chance of winning, Seattle 34%, and a draw 27%, with a total expected goals figure of 3.1. The outcome, a 2-2 draw with San Diego dominating the run of play but struggling to level the score, ended up fitting fairly well with those probabilities, even if the path to get there was far more chaotic than any percentage could have predicted.
In the end, San Diego is left with the feeling of having overturned a two-goal deficit against a Seattle side that, with goals from Joveljic and Gomez, seemed to have the result in the bag. For the home team, the equalizer came on the very last play possible; for the visitors, what remains is the memory of scoring twice in ten second-half minutes that wasn't enough to close out the game.
