San Diego stuns St. Louis City with Dreyer strike to steal all three points
A single shot on target, Anders Dreyer's 38th minute goal, was all San Diego needed to win 1-0 despite St. Louis City SC's dominance at Energizer Park.

A single shot on frame was all San Diego needed to walk away from Energizer Park with all three points. The final score was 1-0, with a goal from Anders Dreyer in the 38th minute proving decisive even though St. Louis City SC controlled most of the clear-cut chances over the 90 minutes.
The MLS matchup produced an even first half in which both sides pushed forward with intent. St. Louis sparked the game first through Conrad Wallem and Rafael Navarro, while San Diego answered with Marcus Ingvartsen and Alejandro Alvarado testing Ben Lundt. The home side nearly broke through in the 36th minute, when Tomas Totland forced a save into the top corner from the left side of the box.
But the blow came two minutes later. Off a counterattack, Alejandro Alvarado threaded a through ball for Anders Dreyer, who finished with his left foot from outside the box into the far corner to make it 0-1. It was the only goal of the night, but it was enough for San Diego to hold on all the way to the final whistle.
Home side pushes, but comes up empty
In the second half, St. Louis City SC turned to the bench in search of a spark, bringing on Tomas Ostrak, Simon Becher and Fallou Fall before the hour mark. The push showed up in the chances created, with shots from Carlo Holse, Tomas Totland and Ostrak himself either saved by the visiting goalkeeper or sent wide. Damion Downs also had a go late on, but San Diego's defense held firm until the whistle in the 94th minute, after four minutes of stoppage time.
The match also produced three yellow cards: Alejandro Alvarado, Lukas MacNaughton and Carlo Holse, the latter for simulation near the end of the match.
What the numbers say
| Statistic | St. Louis City SC | San Diego |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 49.7 | 50.3 |
| Shots | 16 | 13 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 2 |
| Corners | 3 | 4 |
| Passes | 441 | 453 |
| Fouls committed | 17 | 14 |
The numbers tell a clear story: St. Louis City SC was the more insistent side, putting seven shots on target to the visitors' two, and by our estimate generated 1.805 expected goals per match compared to San Diego's 0.691. That gap sums up the home side's frustration. They produced more and better chances, but ran into sharper finishing on the other end and a night in which all that attacking volume never translated into goals.
The result also runs counter to our pre-match projections: our preview gave St. Louis City SC a 53% chance of winning, against a 25% chance for the visitors and 22% for a draw, with expected goals split at 2.26 for the home side and 1.55 for San Diego. None of that held up. The team with the longest odds on paper was the one that left with the three points.
What it means in the standings
In the Western Conference, St. Louis City SC stays in fourth place with 51 points from 33 games played (14 wins, 9 draws, 10 losses), while San Diego sits 12th with 38 points from 33 appearances (9 wins, 11 draws, 13 losses). The gap between the two in the standings is 13 points, a distance tonight's result doesn't erase but one that San Diego narrows in practical terms by picking up a road win over a direct rival for the conference's top spots.
For St. Louis, the match leaves the feeling of a missed opportunity. They controlled long stretches of play and created more danger, but a well-executed counterattack cost them all three points at home.
