Banfield strikes early, survives Tigre's siege to win 2-1
Despite controlling 68.5% of possession and hitting the post twice, Tigre fell 1-2 to a Banfield side that made the most of its chances at the Monumental de Victoria.

Five minutes. That's all it took for Banfield to take the lead at the Monumental de Victoria (Jose Dellagiovanna) and flip a match that Tigre would go on to dominate from start to finish without ever finding a way back. The final score was 1-2 for Banfield, which took home all three points despite being little more than a bystander for long stretches of the game.
The start was a whirlwind. Just five minutes in, Adrian Balboa finished with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 0-1. Tigre answered almost immediately: in the 9th minute, Jeronimo Domina tapped in a low ball hugging the left post after a quick breakaway assist from Santiago Lopez, leveling it at 1-1. The match looked set for an even back and forth, but Banfield struck again before halftime: in the 35th minute, Tomas Adoryan unleashed a left-footed shot from outside the box that slipped in by the left post, assisted by Santiago Esquivel, making it 1-2 at the break.
Dominance that wasn't enough
The curious thing is that scoreline held up through the entire second half, even though Tigre looked like a completely different team from the one that stumbled through the first five minutes. The home side camped out in Banfield's half and racked up chances: Jabes Saralegui rattled the crossbar in the 55th minute, Federico Alvarez struck the right post with a direct free kick in the 89th, and Bruno Leyes forced a crucial save from the visiting goalkeeper in that same final stretch. None of it paid off. Tigre kept pressing with crosses, headers and shots from distance, but the ball refused to go in a second time.
The match statistics capture that gap between control and efficiency. Tigre was far superior in possession and chance creation, but Banfield made its moments count when it mattered most.
| Stat | Tigre | Banfield |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 68.5 | 31.5 |
| Shots | 26 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 2 |
| Corners | 9 | 3 |
| Passes | 493 | 229 |
| Fouls committed | 7 | 14 |
That gulf shows up in the estimated xG too, calculated from the location of every shot in the match: Tigre generated 2.42 expected goals to Banfield's 0.80. It's a measure of chances created, not a prediction, and in this case it tells the story of a team that deserved more than it got.
The preview had hinted at something similar in substance, if not in shape. Our projection gave Tigre a 48% chance of winning, against a 21% chance of a Banfield win and a 31% chance of a draw, with expected goals split 1.35 for the home side and 0.80 for Banfield. The match ended up contradicting that forecast: even though Tigre played like the favorite everyone expected, it was Banfield that walked away with the result.
What it means in the standings
In Group B, the match didn't do much to reshape the lower half of the table. Banfield arrived with 13 points from 12 matches (3 wins, 4 draws and 5 losses) and Tigre with 12 from the same number of games (3 wins, 3 draws and 6 losses); just one point separated them before this meeting, and the road win does little more than preserve that razor-thin gap between the two clubs in the middle-to-lower reaches of the standings.
The match had a bit of everything: a quick-strike finish from an early corner sequence, two immediate responses, and then 55 minutes of fruitless siege. Tigre is left with the feeling of having created enough not to lose, but Banfield knew how to strike at the right moments and walked away with a win that, on paper, wasn't among the most likely outcomes.
