Barcelona Set for Rematch with Arsenal in Champions League Group Stage

The Nyon draw produced a headline that's already making the rounds: Barcelona will face off against Arsenal again, the same team that snatched the European crown from them in the 2025 final. This time it comes in the league stage, and the Catalans get the advantage of hosting the match at their own stadium.

The new Women's Champions League format brings together 18 teams in a single league phase, and Barcelona is facing its title defense in the middle of a transition. The club lost heavyweight names like Alexia Putellas, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, along with other longtime fixtures of the Spanish national team. Even so, the schedule dealt them a favorable hand: besides Arsenal, Pere Romeu's side will host Paris FC and Servette at home, while traveling to face Bayern Munich, Roma and Denmark's HB Koge.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will have a demanding slate at home: the Gunners will host eight-time champion OL Lyonnes, Benfica and Koge itself, and will leave London to visit Paris FC and Inter Milan.

Lyon, the beaten finalist from this past May, has a set of opponents that demands respect: the French side will travel to Arsenal, Juventus and Servette, while hosting Chelsea, Hacken (the Europa Cup champion) and Inter at home.

The rest of the bracket also features heavyweight matchups. Manchester City, the English champion, will host PSG, Real Madrid and Austria Wien, and will travel to face Bayern, Hacken and Inter. Real Madrid itself will play at the Bernabeu (or its usual home venue) against both Parisian clubs and Inter, while heading out to face Bayern, Roma and City.

How the new league phase works

The six matchdays of this phase kick off on September 22 and run through December 16. The top four teams in the 18-team table will advance directly to the quarterfinals, which begin in March. Teams finishing fifth through twelfth will have to battle it out in knockout playoffs in February. The final is scheduled for late May at Poland's national stadium in Warsaw.

The financial side of things also got its moment in the announcement: UEFA will distribute a fund of 18.2 million euros (about $21.2 million) among the 18 participating clubs, with a guaranteed minimum of 505,000 euros ($587,000) for each. Separately, the Women's Europa Cup, the second-tier continental competition that debuted last season with Hacken taking the title, will distribute 5.6 million euros (roughly $6.5 million).

With Putellas out of the lineup and a squad looking to find its footing, Barcelona knows this start to the league phase will be a test of character. The memory of the lost final against Arsenal is still fresh, and the draw has handed them a chance to set the record straight, though there's still a long way to go before knowing whether that matchup will settle anything beyond pride.
