Barcelona sets conditions for a Julián Álvarez signing in January: sell first, then buy
Ferran Olivé admits the club only has 3 or 4 million euros of margin, far short of what the Atlético Madrid striker's salary would cost.

Julián Álvarez has been linked with Barcelona for months, but the club's bank balance carries more weight than its wishes. Ferran Olivé, the club's economic vice president and one of Joan Laporta's most trusted lieutenants, made that clear in an interview with Cadena SER: if nobody packs their bags in January, the "Spider" isn't coming.
Olivé's words left no room for doubt:
"In January we could sign someone because we'll have a positive Fair Play balance, but we would need to sell"Ferran Olivé
The problem isn't just one of image or institutional messaging, it's a matter of math. LaLiga's 1:1 rule requires that for every player who comes in, another must go out, and right now Barcelona's margin is razor thin. As Olivé himself explained, the club has a surplus of barely 3 or 4 million euros, a figure that would only cover "something very small." To put it in perspective, Olivé acknowledged that Julián Álvarez's salary "wouldn't fit" into that gap.
So any deal, if it happens, will depend on the departures the club can complete before the winter window closes. Without sales, there's no Julián Álvarez, no matter how much sense the move makes on the field.
The Spotify Camp Nou, the piece that changes everything
These comments didn't come out of nowhere. They arrived just days after Barcelona presented its 2025/26 financial figures at the Assembly of Delegates, where the club confirmed it has topped 1,000 million euros in revenue. That same meeting officially laid out the new construction timeline for the stadium, which is due to be finished in time for the start of the 2028/29 season and which will host a Champions League final in 2029.
For Olivé, the stadium isn't a separate chapter of the club's finances, it's the foundation for everything else. As he put it:
"With the stadium finished and the team performing well, sponsors will pay more and we'll sell more in the stores. It's a cycle, and the stadium is the cornerstone of the project"Ferran Olivé
The plan is that once Camp Nou is running at full capacity starting in the summer of 2028, the club will finally begin paying down debt that currently stands at 2,680 million euros. The board's target is 2030, the year they expect to leave behind the negative net equity, which currently sits at 168 million euros.
With that backdrop, any major signing has to pass through the calculator first. Julián Álvarez remains a coveted name inside Barcelona's offices, but until someone leaves the squad, he'll remain, above all, a possibility on paper.
