Barcelona rout Athletic Club 2-0 in LaLiga's second round with overwhelming control

Camp Nou saw it coming early: twenty two shots, a post and a crossbar later, Barcelona ended up scoring far less than the game demanded. 2-0 over Athletic Club, with goals from Raphinha and Fermin Lopez, in the second round of LaLiga.

The first goal arrived in the 36th minute, capping a stretch of near misses: Raphinha had already rattled the post in the 23rd minute, and Lamine Yamal would later do the same off the crossbar in the 52nd (that one came afterward, but it shows the pattern). This time it finally went in: Pedri slipped a ball through on goal and Raphinha finished with his left foot from point blank range on the right side, placing it down the middle. Athletic Club, meanwhile, barely showed up going forward: Nico Williams tried a shot from outside the box in the 39th minute without luck, and little else followed.

The second half followed the same script, with Barcelona pushing forward and Unai Simon holding firm in goal. Fermin Lopez gave warning in the 54th and 61st minutes with shots the visiting goalkeeper turned away under the crossbar. Oihan Sancet, in one of Athletic's rare transitions, struck the left post in the 74th minute on a counterattack, the only real scare for the home side all match. But the outcome was already written: in the 81st minute, Fermin Lopez finished from close range with his right foot, low and by the left post, sealing the 2-0. There was still time for Karim Adeyemi and Lamine Yamal to test their luck late on, without success.

Dominance the numbers confirm

The stats leave little doubt about who controlled the match from start to finish.

Given that shot count and that persistence, it's no surprise the xG estimated after the fact (our own measure of what each team generated, not a prediction) came out to 3.702 for Barcelona against just 0.27 for Athletic Club. The 2-0 scoreline, in fact, undersells a chance volume that lopsided.

That gap was also flagged beforehand: our preview projection gave Barcelona an 80% chance of winning, with just 13% for a draw and 7% for an Athletic Club win, with expected goals of 3.04 for the home side and 0.85 for the visitors. The final result fell largely in line with that forecast, though the scoreline (2-0) ended up tighter than those pre match numbers suggested.

It was a match of total dominance in possession and shots, settled by two clean finishes at key moments, though it could have been an even bigger rout had it not been for the posts, the crossbar and Unai Simon's saves. For Athletic Club, the challenge now is halting a run that has started with two straight defeats.
