Barcelona rout Aston Villa 3-0 as Raphinha scores twice at Camp Nou
Yamal opened the scoring early and Raphinha added two second-half goals as Barcelona cruised to a convincing Champions League win.

Barely six minutes had gone by when Lamine Yamal finished left-footed from the center of the box to make it 1-0. It was the first sign of a night in which Barcelona ultimately cruised at Spotify Camp Nou, closing out a 3-0 win over Aston Villa in the Champions League league phase.
The match opened with Barcelona dictating the pace, but Aston Villa answered quickly, testing the hosts with a couple of chances from Matty Cash and João Gomes off corner kicks before the opening goal. Yamal's strike, though, set the tone for the rest of the first half. Anthony Gordon and Fermín López both had shots saved by Zion Suzuki, while Johan Manzambi fired one off the crossbar. The first half ended with that slim lead intact, even though Barcelona's control of the game was already clear.
The second half picked up right where the first left off, and Barcelona wasted no time extending the lead. In the 51st minute, Raphinha popped up in the middle of the box and finished left-footed, set up by Fermín López, to make it 2-0. Twelve minutes later, Raphinha struck again, this time tapping home a low shot by the post off a pass from João Cancelo, completing his brace and making it 3-0. Aston Villa had one real response when Leon Goretzka's header off a cross from Ibrahim Mbaye crashed off the right post, but there were no further scares for a Barcelona side that comfortably managed the rest of the game with substitutions and rotation.
A night of total control
The numbers back up what played out on the field: a Barcelona side clearly in command of possession and chance creation.
| Stat | Barcelona | Aston Villa |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 64.8 | 35.2 |
| Shots | 16 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 1 |
| Big chances | 3 | 1 |
| Corners | 4 | 8 |
| Passes | 603 | 323 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 9 |
The corner count stands out, favoring Aston Villa despite their deficit in just about everything else, a sign that Unai Emery's side also tried to find a way through the air without reward. Based on our estimate calculated from the match's shots, Barcelona generated 2.60 expected goals compared to Aston Villa's 0.85, a gap that supports just how one-sided the final score turned out to be.
What the preview said
In our projection published before kickoff, we gave Barcelona a 56% chance of winning, with a 21% chance of a draw and 23% for Aston Villa, along with a combined expected goals total of 3.81 (2.34 for the hosts and 1.48 for the visitors). The result lined up with that forecast: Barcelona won comfortably and even beat the number of goals we projected for them, while Aston Villa failed to score at all.
What the result means
With this win, Barcelona moves to 9 points in the league phase, the same tally Aston Villa held before this matchday, though both marks reflect the standings before this result was factored in for some teams. What's clear is that Barcelona showed its best form once again at Spotify Camp Nou, with Yamal opening the scoring early and Raphinha proving decisive with two second-half goals, while Aston Villa, despite flashes like Goretzka's shot off the post, never generated enough volume to seriously trouble Joan García.
