Barcelona Survives Late Levante Scare, Wins 4-2 at Ciutat de Valencia
The Catalans raced out to a 3-0 lead before the break, but the hosts refused to fold and cut the gap before Adeyemi sealed it in stoppage time.
Barcelona went up 2-0 inside the first quarter hour and, at that point, the game looked all but decided. But Levante, who found themselves down 0-3 in the second half, pushed hard down the stretch and pulled the score back to 2-3 with eight minutes left. It wasn't enough: in stoppage time, Karim Adeyemi put the finishing touch on the scoreline, and Barcelona walked away from the Ciutat de Valencia with all three points after a resounding 4-2.
The story got going in a hurry. In the 4th minute, Xavi Espart tapped in a Raphinha cross from the right for 0-1, and just 14 minutes later Lamine Yamal, also set up by Raphinha, finished through the middle of the goal to make it 0-2. Levante had chances of their own through Adrián de la Fuente and Roger Brugué, but couldn't find the net, and to make matters worse, VAR waved off a possible penalty for the hosts in the 28th minute. The 0-2 scoreline held until halftime, after the referee added six minutes of first-half stoppage time.
The decisive blow, or so it seemed, came right at the start of the second half: in the 46th minute, Aïssa Mandi brought down Lamine Yamal inside the box, and the young academy product converted the penalty himself to make it 0-3. Barcelona, with 74.9% possession and 782 completed passes to Levante's 243, were dictating the tempo at will.
Levante's late fightback falls short
The game could have died right there, but Levante refused to accept it. The substitutions changed the picture: Iván Romero, who had come on for Petar Ratkov, made it 1-3 in the 78th minute with a close-range finish from the right. Nine minutes later, Roger Brugué capitalized on a counterattack to slot it home by the left post, making it 2-3 and sending the stadium dreaming of an improbable comeback. That dream didn't last: in the 92nd minute, Karim Adeyemi, on since the second half began, finished from the right off a Marc Bernal assist to make it 4-2, the final score.
| Stat | Levante | Barcelona |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 25.1 | 74.9 |
| Shots | 13 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 6 |
| Big chances | 2 | 2 |
| Corners | 3 | 5 |
| Passes | 243 | 782 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 11 |
What stands out is that, despite the huge gap in possession and passing, Levante actually finished with more total shots (13 to 12) and more shots on target (7 to 6). That balance in shooting output shows up in the xG estimated after the fact from the match's shots: 3.039 for Levante against 2.235 for Barcelona, a figure that captures just how much danger the home side generated despite playing with only a fraction of the ball.
What the preview said versus what happened on the pitch
Before kickoff, our projection gave Barcelona a 74% chance of winning, against 10% for Levante and 16% for a draw, with expected goals of 2.80 for Barcelona and 1.02 for Levante (a combined 3.82). The final result, a 4-2 scoreline with four Barcelona goals, lined up reasonably well with that projection at its core, though Levante ended up scoring quite a bit more than expected and gave the scoreline a drama the preview hadn't hinted at.
With this result, Barcelona moves to 15 points from 5 matches played, with a record of 5 wins, 0 draws and 0 losses, and sits atop the LaLiga table with a goal difference of +17. Levante, meanwhile, remain on 5 points from 5 matches, with 1 win, 2 draws and 2 losses, and a goal difference of -2. The gap between the two clubs now stands at 10 points in the standings.
The match leaves a split impression: a Barcelona side that put the game away early and never lost control of the ball, and a Levante side that, even in defeat, showed it wouldn't give up until the final whistle and managed to generate real danger with precious little of the ball at its disposal.
