Beier's wonder strike gives Dortmund a 1-0 win over Frankfurt

The forward, on just moments after coming off the bench, scored in the 79th minute to seal a dominant performance that the scoreline didn't fully capture, with Dortmund sitting atop the Bundesliga.

Beier's wonder strike gives Dortmund a 1-0 win over Frankfurt

A long-range strike from substitute Maximilian Beier was enough to earn Borussia Dortmund all three points against Eintracht Frankfurt. The final score, 1-0, undersold just how much the home side created at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, where Dortmund pressed for nearly the entire match but couldn't break the deadlock until well into the second half.

Dortmund came out looking to settle things early. Fabio Silva gave an early warning in the 7th minute with a shot that sailed over the bar, and a minute later he nearly put his side ahead with a header that clipped the crossbar. Serhou Guirassy also had his chances: he tested Noah Atubolu in the 14th and 16th minutes, forcing saves, and then in the second half, in the 52nd minute, he rattled the crossbar with a header that could have changed the course of the match much sooner. Frankfurt, for its part, wasn't entirely passive either, as Jonathan Burkardt and Fares Chaibi tried their luck from outside the box on several occasions but couldn't find the target.

The first half ended scoreless despite the home side's constant pressure, with Dortmund racking up several corners it couldn't convert. The second half followed the same script: clear chances for Dortmund, stubborn resistance from Frankfurt, and a scoreboard that refused to budge.

The goal that broke the deadlock

Niko Kovac shuffled his bench in search of answers, making three substitutions at once in the 67th minute, among them Maximilian Beier. The gamble paid off: in the 79th minute, Beier curled a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top corner, finishing off an assist from Jobe Bellingham, who had also just come on. It proved to be the only goal of the match, enough to seal the result. In the closing stages Frankfurt tried to respond with the introductions of Can Uzun, Ansgar Knauff and Mario Gotze, but none of them could generate real danger against Gregor Kobel's goal.

The numbers behind the dominance

The stats back up what was clear on the field: Dortmund was comfortably the better side in terms of volume of play, even if it couldn't turn that into a wider margin on the scoreboard.

The distribution of chances is also reflected in our own expected goals estimate: Dortmund produced 1.629 xG against Frankfurt's 0.916, a gap that backs up the home side's dominance while still showing the visitors had their own looks at goal.

Heading into the match, we had projected a 64% chance of a Dortmund win, 20% for a draw and 16% for a Frankfurt victory, with an expected goals forecast of 2.48 for the home side and 1.19 for Frankfurt, a combined total of 3.66. The final result confirmed the home favorite, though with a far tighter scoreline than projected: a single goal proved to be enough in a match that, based on chances created, could easily have turned into a rout.

What the result means in the standings

With the win, Borussia Dortmund moves to 17 points from 7 matches played, with 5 wins, 2 draws and no losses, staying atop the Bundesliga table. Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, remains on 8 points after 7 matches, with 2 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses, sitting in 13th place. The 9-point gap between the two sides is a fairly accurate reflection of what played out on the field: a solid, dominant Dortmund, and a Frankfurt side that resisted as best it could but never found the answers to leave SIGNAL IDUNA PARK with anything to show for it.
