Betis Strikes Late, Breaking Down Elche 0-2 at the Martinez Valero
Riquelme and Bartra scored in the closing stretch to give Pellegrini's side a win that cements their hold on fourth place in LaLiga.

Ten minutes. That's all Real Betis needed to break open a match that had been slipping away from them at the Martinez Valero. Manuel Pellegrini's side walked away with all three points thanks to a 0-2 win built almost entirely in the closing stretch, right as Elche had burned through most of its ideas and the legs were starting to go.
The first half was tight, with Elche arguably carrying a bit more spark. Fer Niño gave an early warning with a shot that was blocked, then headed one off the crossbar in stoppage time, the clearest chance of the opening 45 minutes for Elche. Betis, with Isco and Antony pulling the strings through the middle, had their own looks (Fornals and Parrott both tested Dituro) but couldn't find the net. The teams went into the break scoreless, in a cramped match with few clean openings.
The second half followed a similar pattern: chances came and went at both ends, with shots sailing just wide (Grady Diangana rattled one near the top corner, Isco grazed the post on another attempt) but nothing going in. Elche even had its moments, with Lucas Cepeda and German Valera causing trouble out wide before both were substituted.
The stretch that decided it
The match turned in the 80th minute. Jose Antonio Morante, just on the field, headed a cross from Dani Ceballos off the right post. Rodrigo Riquelme pounced on the rebound, finishing from close range through the middle of the goal to make it 0-1. Elche, which had held firm up to that point, never recovered and had no answer the rest of the way.
Eight minutes later came the clincher. A corner swung into the box found the head of Marc Bartra, who directed it in by the left post to make it 0-2 in the 88th minute, again assisted by Ceballos. The scoreline held from there, and Betis walked away with a win built, quite literally, in the final ten minutes of the match.
What the numbers say
The stats line up pretty closely with what played out on the field: a Betis side sharper in the final third, even if the gap in overall ball control wasn't massive.
| Stat | Elche | Real Betis |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 47.9 | 52.1 |
| Shots | 13 | 18 |
| Shots on target | 1 | 9 |
| Big chances | 2 | 3 |
| Corners | 9 | 8 |
| Passes | 487 | 530 |
| Fouls committed | 12 | 7 |
The number that stands out most is shots on target: just one for Elche against nine for Real Betis, a huge gap that explains why the match ended without much drama for Dituro in the visiting goal. Our in-house expected goals estimate for the match backs up that edge too: 1.42 for Elche compared to 2.79 for Real Betis, a figure we calculated from the shots each side produced over the 90 minutes.
Before kickoff, our projection gave Real Betis a 42% chance of winning, with 30% for Elche and 28% for a draw, with total expected goals of 2.86. The final result lined up with that forecast: the favorite won, though the 0-2 scoreline didn't arrive until the closing stretch, after a match that was far more even than those pre-game numbers suggested.
What the result means
With the win, Real Betis moves to 26 points in LaLiga, settled into fourth place in the table. Elche, meanwhile, stays at 10 points in 18th, stuck in a relegation zone that's starting to weigh as the season moves along. The gap between the two sides in the standings was already 16 points before this match, and today's result only confirms the distance separating one team from the other this early in the season.
