Boca Juniors Rout Recoleta 3-1, Advance in Copa Sudamericana After Explosive Second Half
La Ribera came back from a 0-1 deficit and settled the tie with a three-goal blitz in just thirteen minutes of the second half.

Boca Juniors turned around a match that started uphill and finished with a 3-1 rout of Recoleta at Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó, in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. The Ribera side fell behind in the opening minutes, but a three-goal blitz in just thirteen minutes of the second half settled the tie in this round.
The early blow came fast: in the 4th minute, Pedro Ríos surprised everyone with a left-footed strike from outside the box that sneaked in low, just inside the left post, for Recoleta's 0-1. Boca answered with relentless pressure throughout the first half, generating chance after chance (Merentiel off the post, Delgado off the crossbar, Ascacíbar just grazing the bar), but went into the break unable to level things, with the score still 0-1.
The Second-Half Storm
The start of the second half changed the story completely. Just after the restart, there was a confusing incident: Wilfrido Báez was shown a red card for fighting, but referee Piero Maza reviewed the play with VAR and decided to overturn the expulsion. The match continued with eleven players on each side, and that's when Boca seized the momentum.
In the 48th minute, Santiago Ascacíbar leveled the score with a right-footed shot from the center of the box, assisted by Sebastián Villa, who had come on at halftime. Two minutes later, in the 50th, Milton Delgado headed home from close range, again off a Villa cross, to make it 2-1. The home side kept control from there, and in the 61st minute Leonel Flores extended the lead with a right-footed strike from outside the box that curled into the top left corner, assisted by Miguel Merentiel, for the final 3-1.
Recoleta, meanwhile, finished with ten men: in the 68th minute Dairon Mosquera picked up a second yellow card for dangerous play, leaving his side a man down for the closing stretch, by which point the result was already all but decided.
A Lopsided Dominance in the Numbers
The stats reflect the gap in intensity between the two sides over the 90 minutes.
| Stat | Boca Juniors | Recoleta |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 77.4 | 22.6 |
| Shots | 39 | 6 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 3 |
| Big chances | 4 | 1 |
| Corners | 8 | 1 |
| Passes | 732 | 215 |
| Fouls committed | 9 | 9 |
Boca fired 39 shots to their rival's 6 and controlled the ball for more than three quarters of the match. According to our own estimate calculated from shot locations, the home side generated an xG of 5.26 compared to just 0.42 for Recoleta, a gap that confirms the 3-1 scoreline may have even fallen short of what was produced in attack, especially considering the shots off the post and crossbar that didn't turn into goals during the first half.
What the Preview Said and What Happened on the Field
Before the match, our projection gave Boca Juniors a 48% chance of winning, 33% for a draw and 19% for an away win, with expected goals of 1.25 for the home side and 0.71 for Recoleta. The way the first half unfolded seemed to defy that forecast, with Recoleta ahead on the scoreboard despite being thoroughly outplayed, but Boca's second-half response ended up confirming the favoritism they'd been given before kickoff, even by a wider margin than projected in expected goals.
The result leaves Boca Juniors with a commanding advance in this Copa Sudamericana tie, built on an overwhelming second half in which they scored three goals in thirteen minutes after dominating without reward through the first 45. For Recoleta, Pedro Ríos's early goal ended up a mirage given the gap in offensive volume the home side showed throughout the match.
