Boca Juniors rout Union Santa Fe 3-0 at La Bombonera to cement spot as runner-up

Lautaro Di Lollo rose to head home the opener in the 21st minute at La Bombonera, and from that point on Boca Juniors never let go of control. The home side closed out the match 3-0 against Union Santa Fe, with Leonel Flores adding two more goals late on, in the Argentina Primera Division.

The first goal came from a well-worked move: a free kick taken by Leandro Paredes, a cross into the box, and a header from Di Lollo that found the bottom corner just inside the left post. That early goal let Boca take over the ball and dictate the tempo, while Union Santa Fe struggled to threaten, managing only the occasional long-range effort from Ignacio Malcorra or Mauro Luna Diale.

The second half followed the same script, with Boca pushing forward and Union doing what it could to hold on. Rodolfo Arruabarrena's substitutions added fresh legs up front with the introductions of Enner Valencia, Carlos Palacios and Leonel Flores, and it was Flores who ended up making the difference. In the 82nd minute, he curled a right-footed finish from the center of the box into the top corner to make it 2-0. Then, in stoppage time, in the 91st minute, he capped his night with another right-footed strike, this time set up by Valencia, sealing the 3-0 final score.

A dominance the numbers confirm

With 25 shots to the visitors' 4, Boca generated, according to our own xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, 3.02 expected goals, far above Union Santa Fe's 0.17. In other words, the scoreline was no fluke but the reflection of a gap that was visible throughout the 90 minutes, with Miguel Merentiel, Sebastian Villa and Santiago Ascacibar creating chances that didn't quite go in before Flores sealed the result.

Our preview had projected Boca as the clear favorite, giving the home side a 61% chance of winning compared to 25% for a draw and 14% for an away win, with expected goals of 1.83 for the hosts against 0.78 for the visitors. The final result actually exceeded that projection: Boca not only won but did so with more authority than expected, while Union Santa Fe fell well short of even its projected goal tally.

What it means in the standings

In Group A, Boca Juniors moved to 20 points from 11 matches played (5 wins, 5 draws, 1 loss) and sits second, within striking distance of leaders Instituto, who have 25. Union Santa Fe, meanwhile, stayed on 13 points after the same number of matches (4 wins, 1 draw, 6 losses), in ninth place. The gap between the two sides in the table is 7 points, something tonight's match reflected quite faithfully.

For Boca, the win confirms the level they've been showing at home. For Union Santa Fe, the challenge remains the same one that brought them to this point: finding a way to pick up three points outside of the moments when they manage to sit back well, something they failed to do at any stage of tonight's match at La Bombonera.
