Boca to face Sao Paulo in Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals
The first leg will be played at La Bombonera on September 8 at 9:30 p.m., with the return match at the Morumbi a week later.
La Bombonera has another marquee date on the international calendar. Boca now knows its next opponent in the Copa Sudamericana, and also knows exactly when each match will be played: Sao Paulo will stand in the way in the quarterfinals, after Boca eliminated Deportivo Recoleta in the previous round.
The team led by Rodolfo Arruabarrena knocked out Deportivo Recoleta in the round of 16 and now steps into a much tougher tie. Sao Paulo is no ordinary opponent in the Sudamericana: the Brazilian club arrives with the weight of being one of the continent's heavyweights and with real ambitions of adding another international title to its history.
The format of the tie has already been set. The first leg will be played at La Bombonera on Tuesday, September 8, kicking off at 9:30 p.m. A week later, on Tuesday, September 15, also at 9:30 p.m., the return leg will be held at the Morumbi, the Sao Paulo stadium that tends to turn into a pressure cooker whenever the home side needs to come from behind or protect a lead.
Journalist Diego Monroig confirmed the dates and kickoff times for both matches on SportsCenter, putting to rest any lingering questions about how CONMEBOL had organized the fixture.
A matchup with history behind it
Boca and Sao Paulo are no strangers to each other. Matchups between Argentine and Brazilian clubs in continental competition always carry an extra edge, beyond whatever the scoreline ends up being. Hosting the first leg gives Boca a chance to try to build a meaningful cushion before traveling to Brazil, something that often proves decisive in this kind of tie.
For Arruabarrena, the challenge is twofold: maintain the level of play that got his team through to this stage while also managing his players' workload if there are league matches at home in Argentina sandwiched between the two Sudamericana dates. Having home advantage in the first leg can be a plus, but it also comes with responsibility: playing well will not be enough, Boca will need to turn that into goals before heading to the Morumbi.
Sao Paulo, for its part, is also eyeing the Sudamericana as a possible path to adding another continental trophy to its collection. The tie promises two closely fought matches, the kind where small details, a red card, an away goal, a referee's call, can tip the balance either way.
With the dates now confirmed, anticipation is building ahead of the tie. There is just over two weeks left before Boca hosts Sao Paulo in a match that could go a long way toward defining the club's ambitions in the competition.
