Bodø/Glimt stuns Dortmund with 1-0 Champions League upset
A second-half goal from Fredrik Sjøvold gave Bodø/Glimt a surprise win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League league phase.

Aspmyra Stadion erupted in the 51st minute when Fredrik Sjøvold's shot found the back of the Borussia Dortmund net. It was the only goal of the night, and it was enough for Bodø/Glimt to pull off a 1-0 win over one of the heavyweights of the Champions League, in a league phase matchup.
The first half was tight and goalless, with both sides creating some danger but failing to find a breakthrough. Bodø/Glimt gave an early warning with a Sondre Fet shot that sailed high, and Dortmund answered with attempts from Ramy Bensebaini and Joey Veerman that also missed the target. Jens Petter Hauge tested the Dortmund defense twice for the home side, one shot saved and another that went wide, while Andreas Helmersen also had a chance near halftime with a shot the Dortmund goalkeeper managed to control. The teams went into the break scoreless, though Bodø/Glimt had already made clear it had no intention of sitting back.
The goal that changed everything
Just after the restart, the Norwegian side kept pushing down the same route: first Helmersen with a header off a corner that went high, then Hauge with a shot that was blocked. The home side's persistence paid off in the 51st minute: Sondre Auklend whipped in a cross and Fredrik Sjøvold finished with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 1-0.
Dortmund responded with a wave of substitutions, bringing on Felix Nmecha, Ethan Nwaneri, Serhou Guirassy and Julian Ryerson all at once in an attempt to change the course of the match. With them came the Germans' clearest chances of the second half: Nmecha tested the crossbar area in the 61st minute, Guirassy forced a save from the home goalkeeper in the 68th, and Nwaneri had two attempts, one header and one with his left foot, that were both stopped low. In stoppage time, with two minutes added on, the German side threw everyone forward and piled up four straight corners in search of an equalizer, but Bodø/Glimt held on until the final whistle.
What the numbers say
The scoreline did not fully reflect how the game was shared: Dortmund controlled slightly more possession and had more shots on target, but Bodø/Glimt was more clinical in the box and created more clear-cut chances.
| Stat | Bodø/Glimt | Borussia Dortmund |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 47.8 | 52.2 |
| Shots | 11 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 4 |
| Big chances | 3 | 1 |
| Corners | 4 | 9 |
| Passes | 550 | 583 |
| Fouls committed | 7 | 8 |
According to our post-match xG estimate, calculated from the shots taken in the game, Bodø/Glimt generated 1.208 expected goals to Dortmund's 0.773, a gap that lines up with how the scoreline played out.
The result stands in sharp contrast to our pre-match projection: our model gave Dortmund a 30% chance of winning compared to 47% for Bodø/Glimt, with expected goals split 2.05 for the home side and 1.64 for the visitors, for a combined total near 3.69 goals. In the end there was just one goal in the entire match, and the team given less of a chance on paper walked away with all three points.
What it means for the table
With this result, Borussia Dortmund sits on 3 points from 2 games played with a goal difference of 0, while Bodø/Glimt also moved to 3 points from 2 appearances, though with a goal difference of -4. Both teams find themselves in the lower reaches of the league phase, in a competition where there is still plenty of road ahead and where tonight at Aspmyra Stadion will go down as the upset of the matchday.
