Bologna makes Cagliari pay for empty possession, wins 0-2 at Unipol Domus
A Casale header and a penalty converted by Bernardeschi gave Bologna an away win over a Cagliari side that dominated the ball but lacked finishing touch.

Cagliari controlled the ball, racked up the passes and ended up with nothing to celebrate at the Unipol Domus. Bologna walked away with all three points thanks to a 0-2 built on two precise moments: a header off a corner kick and a penalty converted late in the match. Outside of those two minutes, the game was a one-way possession monologue that never found its way to the net.
The first half ended scoreless but offered hints of what was to come. Bologna gave an early warning with a shot from Jens Odgaard that grazed the crossbar and another attempt from Federico Bernardeschi that also failed to connect, while Cagliari barely threatened with a shot from Paul Mendy that went just wide. At halftime it was 0-0 on the scoreboard, but Bologna looked closer to breaking through.
The header that broke the deadlock
The opener came in the 56th minute: Nicolo Casale met a cross from Juan Miranda, which had originated from a corner, with a header from the center of the box, sending it low into the left corner. The 0-1 gave Bologna emotional control of the match just as Cagliari began shuffling its bench in search of a response.
The game was settled for good in the 77th minute, when Juan Rodriguez committed a handball penalty inside the area. Two minutes later, Bernardeschi stepped up from the spot and sent his left-footed shot to the right side of the goal for the final 0-2. In between, Cagliari had its best chance on a shot from Mendy that was turned away by a strong save.
The numbers behind the gap
Cagliari had more of the ball, but Bologna was far sharper near goal, a story the stats make clear:
| Stat | Cagliari | Bologna |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 57.1 | 42.9 |
| Shots | 4 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 1 | 5 |
| Corners | 1 | 6 |
| Passes | 513 | 382 |
| Fouls committed | 25 | 13 |
The estimated xG generated in the match, calculated after the fact based on shot location, tells the same story: 0.34 for Cagliari against 1.75 for Bologna. A match in which the home side held the ball but the visitors held the clear chances, also reflected in Bologna's two big chances created against none for Cagliari.
What's striking is that the preview pointed in a different direction in terms of the goal script: we projected a tight match, with a 28% chance for Cagliari, a 32% chance of a draw and 40% for Bologna, with a total of 2.22 expected goals split as 1 for the home side and 1.22 for the visitors. The final result ended up more lopsided than that projection suggested, though Bologna's relative edge as favorite did hold up on the field.
What the result means
Cagliari came into this match in eighth place in Serie A with 13 points from 8 games played, the product of 4 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses, and this defeat leaves the club with a negative goal difference. Bologna, meanwhile, had been sitting lower in the table, in 13th place with 8 points after 2 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses in the same number of matches, and this road win gives the club a result that pulls it toward the middle of the standings. The five-point gap between the two sides before this match has now narrowed after what happened at the Unipol Domus.
With yellow cards handed out to Bernardeschi, Ze Pedro, Roberto Gagliardini and Alessandro Deiola, and five substitutions on each side before the final whistle, the match had intensity but never any real danger of a home comeback. Bologna defended the lead without major scares and left the pitch with all three points from a ground where it had seen less of the ball but had been far sharper with it.
