Borussia Monchengladbach fall to Hoffenheim, now six losses with no points in the Bundesliga
Hoffenheim overturned Mohya's equalizer with a goal from Prass and won 1-2 in a match the visitors dominated clearly.

Borussia Monchengladbach needed a win almost desperately, having gone six matchdays without a point in the Bundesliga. What they got instead was another defeat, their sixth, this time 1-2 against TSG Hoffenheim at Borussia-Park, in a match that featured a partial comeback and yet another uphill finish.
Hoffenheim struck first and struck fast. In the 10th minute, Bambase Conte finished with his left foot from the center of the box after a cross from Alexander Prass, making it 0-1, a scoreline that reflected the first half fairly well: before the break, Fisnik Asllani had crashed a shot off the crossbar, and Borussia had barely troubled Oliver Baumann.
The second half opened with a different look. Three minutes after the restart, Wael Mohya equalized with a right-footed shot from inside the box, assisted by Florian Neuhaus, and Borussia-Park dared to dream of a comeback. It didn't last long: five minutes later, Alexander Prass restored Hoffenheim's lead with a left-footed shot from the center of the area, set up by Adam Hlozek, and that 1-2 scoreline held for good.
Dominance reflected in the numbers
Hoffenheim didn't just win, they were also superior in nearly every statistical category. They had more possession, more shots and, above all, far more sharpness in front of goal.
| Statistic | Borussia Monchengladbach | TSG Hoffenheim |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 47.5 | 52.5 |
| Shots | 9 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 8 |
| Corners | 3 | 6 |
| Passes | 397 | 441 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 13 |
Our own expected goals estimate, based on the shots taken in the match, also makes clear which side created more danger: 0.54 for Borussia against 1.97 for Hoffenheim, a gap that lines up with the eight shots on target the visitors managed compared to just three for the home side.
The result also runs counter to what was projected before kickoff. In our preview we gave Borussia a 40% chance of winning, Hoffenheim 36%, and a draw 24%, with expected goals of 1.88 for the home side and 1.77 for the visitors, a combined 3.65 very close to the three goals actually scored, though split differently: it was Hoffenheim, the less favored side on paper, who walked away with all three points.
What the standings show
In the Bundesliga table, Borussia Monchengladbach sit in 18th place, pointless through six matches, with zero wins, zero draws and six losses. Hoffenheim, for their part, have 6 points from the same number of games, with two wins and four losses, placing them 14th. The gap between the two sides is 6 points, a margin that's already starting to matter at this stage of the season.
For Hoffenheim, the win snaps a rough run of results and offers some breathing room in the lower-middle of the table. For Borussia Monchengladbach, though, the picture keeps getting bleaker: Mohya's response at the start of the second half showed the team can still compete, but the lack of defensive solidity, reflected in the eight clear chances they conceded, remains a problem they can't seem to solve.
