Botafogo dominates but can't complete comeback as Cienciano advances in Copa Sudamericana
The home side won 1-0 in the round of 16 second leg, but the 6-1 thrashing they suffered in the first leg was enough to send them out of the competition.

Botafogo beat Cienciano 1-0 at the Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16. The result, however, wasn't enough to overturn what had happened in the first leg, where Cienciano had thrashed Botafogo 6-1 at home. The road both teams traveled to reach this tie tells its own story: Botafogo itself had fallen 1-6 in Cusco, while Cienciano arrived at this match carrying that emphatic win.
Dominance that wasn't enough
The home side came out looking for the comeback and got off to a fast start: in the 7th minute, Danilo finished with his right foot from inside the box after an assist from Alvaro Montoro, who had taken a free kick, putting Botafogo up 1-0. That goal set off alarm bells for the Peruvian side, which pulled back and tried to manage its aggregate lead.
Botafogo kept pressing throughout the first half. Arthur Cabral, Danilo, Huguinho and Alex Telles all tried their luck from different spots without finding a second goal. The hope of extending the lead arrived in the 35th minute, when Danilo Santos appeared to score, but a VAR review ruled it out for a handball by the player himself just before. Then, in the second half, in the 49th minute, the referee also turned down a potential penalty for the home side after consulting the video review, another blow to the hosts' hopes.
With the game growing more disjointed, Botafogo kept creating chances through Junior Santos, Kadir Barria, Matheus Martins and Edenilson, but poor finishing and the visiting goalkeeper's saves kept the score unchanged. Cienciano, for its part, focused on defending with discipline and looking for the occasional counterattack through Alejandro Hohberg and Gonzalo Aguirre, without seriously threatening. The match closed with one more setback for the home side: in the 95th minute, Nahuel Ferraresi was sent off with a red card.
The numbers behind the dominance
The statistics clearly reflect the gap in control between the two sides over the 90 minutes, though it wasn't enough to flip the tie.
| Statistic | Botafogo | Cienciano |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 69.2 | 30.8 |
| Shots | 22 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 1 |
| Corners | 6 | 1 |
| Passes | 493 | 233 |
| Fouls committed | 12 | 17 |
The most telling figure comes from the xG calculated after the fact based on the match's shots: Botafogo generated 2.99 expected goals against just 0.297 for Cienciano. That gap confirms the home side deserved a wider margin on the scoreboard, though finishing and luck weren't on their side at the decisive moments.
What the preview said
The projection published before the match gave Botafogo a 73% chance of winning, against 21% for a draw and just 6% for Cienciano, with expected goals set at 2 for the home side and 0.46 for the visitors. The way the match played out, with that overwhelming dominance and an xG near 3 goals, ended up matching that forecast of a home win. However, the story of the tie had largely already been written in the first leg, and a one-goal margin, however deserved, wasn't enough to change the course of the series given the sizable lead Cienciano had built in the previous match.
What the match leaves behind
Botafogo exits this round with the feeling of having done enough for a bigger result, but paying dearly for missed chances and unfavorable VAR calls at key moments. Cienciano, without needing to shine at the Nilton Santos, managed the lead it built at home and held up defensively enough to seal its place in the next round of the Copa Sudamericana.
