Cienciano Returns to Copa Sudamericana Quarterfinals After 6-2 Aggregate Rout of Botafogo
The Peruvian side posts its best result in the continental tournament in 22 years, retracing the path of its only international title, won back in 2003.
Twenty three years later, Cusco is dreaming of South America again. And that's no small comparison: the last time Cienciano advanced this far in the Copa Sudamericana, the club ended up lifting the trophy. Now, after routing Botafogo 6-2 on aggregate, "Papá" is back in the continental tournament's quarterfinals for the first time since that unforgettable 2003 run.
The tie against the Brazilian club left no room for doubt. Cienciano paired the ruthlessness it typically shows at altitude at Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega with a tactical discipline that also traveled well on the road, something that isn't always easy for Peruvian clubs looking to compete in Brazil. The result became one of the most celebrated qualifications in Peruvian soccer so far this year: the imperial city itself set up a giant screen so fans could watch the trip to the quarterfinals together.
The number speaks for itself: since 2003, no Peruvian club had managed to push Cienciano among the Sudamericana's final eight. There were attempts along the way, a run to the round of 16 in 2009 that ended against San Lorenzo, and another this very year, 2025, eliminated by Bolivar, but the quarterfinal stage had become unfinished business that the team led by Horacio Melgarejo finally settled.
The road here was anything but easy
Before dispatching Botafogo, Cienciano had to pull off a comeback for the history books. In the round of 16 it had lost 2-0 to Lanus in Argentina, and everything pointed to the dream ending right there. But back in Cusco, with the altitude as an ally and the entire squad believing, a resounding 4-0 flipped the tie and sent the club into the round of 16, err, the round of 8. From there, the performance against Botafogo confirmed that this Cienciano side has what it takes to dream big.
That 2003 run remains the inevitable point of reference. That year Cienciano eliminated Santos of Brazil in the quarterfinals, then knocked out Atletico Nacional in the semifinals, and finally became champion by beating River Plate in the final, still the only international title a Peruvian club has in its trophy case to this day.
The next step comes in early September, when Cienciano hosts Uruguay's Montevideo City Torque in Cusco for the first leg of the quarterfinals. The second leg will be played a week later in Uruguay. Whoever advances will face the winner of the tie between Atletico Mineiro and Santos, another Brazilian opponent on the horizon for a club that, at least for a few weeks, has the entire country looking toward Cusco once again.
