Braga turns the tables on Alverca as Pau Victor strikes twice in five minutes

Alverca went ahead from the penalty spot just past the quarter-hour mark of the first half and reached the break dreaming of an upset. But Sporting Braga had other plans: in just seven minutes of the second half, the visitors flipped the score and walked away with a 1-2 win at the Complexo Desportivo FC Alverca, in a Liga Portugal matchup.

The home side started better than the script suggested. Chiquinho, who had already been causing trouble through the middle, drew the penalty when Diego Rodrigues fouled him inside the box, then stepped up to convert it himself: a low right-footed strike near the left post made it 1-0 in the 26th minute. Alverca defended that lead tooth and nail until halftime, even as Isaac James gave a warning sign with a shot that was met by the goalkeeper right before the whistle for the break.

Braga's response came quickly after the restart. In the 49th minute, Pau Victor popped up from the center of the box to poke home a low left-footed finish near the left post, assisted by Demir Ege Tiknaz, leveling the score. Less than seven minutes later, Pau Victor struck again, this time from close range, completing his brace and finishing off the visitors' comeback in the 56th minute. In between, Braga even had a third goal denied by the woodwork, with Victor Gomez rattling the right post on the same play.

Alverca tried to respond, with Chiquinho testing the keeper from outside the box and Andre Vidigal going for a long-range free kick deep into stoppage time, but no more goals came and the result held until the final whistle.

The numbers behind the result

The stats confirm that Braga's comeback was no fluke. The visiting side dominated possession and multiplied the home team's scoring chances, as shown in the table below:

StatAlvercaSporting Braga
Possession (%)31.968.1
Shots616
Shots on target26
Big chances12
Corners22
Passes309691
Fouls committed1115

With numbers like those, it's no surprise the xG generated in the match (our own estimate based on the shots taken, not a prediction) also favors Braga: 2.411 to Alverca's 1.296. The home side scored with its only clear big chance, while the visitors needed more volume to find their two goals.

What stands out is that the result ended up lining up fairly well with our pre-match projections: we gave Braga a 61% chance of winning, with 25% for a draw and just 14% for Alverca, with expected goals of 1.89 for the visitors and 0.82 for the home side. The final score, with Braga winning 2-1, tracks with that forecast, even if the path there took an early twist with Alverca's opening penalty.

What it means in the standings

In the Liga Portugal table, Braga came into this match in seventh place with 7 points from 3 games played (2 wins and 1 draw), while Alverca sat in 16th with just 2 points from 5 outings (2 draws and 3 losses), a 5-point gap between the two sides before kickoff. The loss leaves Alverca still searching for its first win of the tournament, while Braga adds another positive result that keeps it among the top spots.
