Brighton thrash Aston Villa 4-0 on Premier League opening day

The hosts put the game away in the first half hour with a crushing display.

Brighton thrash Aston Villa 4-0 on Premier League opening day

It took just 30 minutes for the American Express Stadium to see the contest effectively end. Brighton and Hove Albion thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 on the opening weekend of the Premier League, with a devastating first half hour that left the visitors on the ropes long before the break.

The opener came almost by accident: in the 7th minute, Maxim De Cuyper cracked a shot off the right post and the rebound bounced off Victor Lindelöf's legs and into his own net. Aston Villa, who up to that point had produced the clearer chances through Emiliano Buendía testing the keeper from outside the box on three separate occasions without success, had no answer. Ten minutes later, in the 17th minute, De Cuyper made no mistake this time, finishing with his left foot from close range after a Georginio Rutter assist to make it 2-0.

The knockout blow arrived in barely 60 seconds. Jack Hinshelwood headed home unmarked to make it 3-0 in the 29th minute after a Diego Gómez cross, and a minute later, in the 30th, Hinshelwood struck again with a low shot from the center of the box to complete the rout at 4-0. In half an hour, Brighton had already settled the match.

As if that weren't enough for Aston Villa, the first half got even worse when João Gomes was sent off in the 39th minute, after a VAR review that first overturned the red card and then, a minute later, reinstated it following a scuffle. Down a man and four goals behind, the visitors reached halftime with nothing to argue about.

The second half was, above all, a formality. Brighton kept creating chances (Costinha struck the left post in the 64th minute and Diego Gómez tried his luck several times), but without the urgency of the first half, and the score stayed put despite efforts from both sides, including a Costinha header that was saved in the 89th minute.

Total command in the numbers

The stats back up what was plain to see on the field: Brighton were in control from start to finish.

With 21 shots to Aston Villa's 6 and nearly three quarters of possession, Brighton left no doubt about who controlled the ball and the game. Our xG estimate, calculated from the shots taken in the match, puts the home side's attacking output at 3.43 against just 0.54 for Aston Villa, a gap that reflects the real distance between the two teams on the day.

The result also stands in sharp contrast to our preview projection, which gave Brighton a 38% chance of winning, a 29% chance of a draw and a 33% chance of an Aston Villa win, with a combined expected goals total of just 2.64 for both teams. The 4-0 rout blew well past that forecast, which had also given Aston Villa real chances of taking all three points.

What the opening weekend leaves behind

With this result, Brighton and Hove Albion started the season at the top of the table, with 3 points from their only match played and a goal difference of +4, though they share that points total with several other teams who also won their openers. Aston Villa, meanwhile, are left with no points and a goal difference of -4 after the defeat, sitting 3 points behind their opponents in the standings. It's only the first round, so the table still says little, but the impression left by the match is clear: Aston Villa never found a way to slow down a Brighton side that was brilliant while the numerical advantage lasted and that, even with an extra man for nearly the entire second half, didn't need to press hard to protect the scoreline.
