Bulgaria strikes twice to spoil Luxembourg's domination

Two early goals from Balov and Iliev were enough for Bulgaria to claim victory over a Luxembourg side that had more possession and shots in the Nations League.

Bulgaria strikes twice to spoil Luxembourg's domination

Two blows in 15 minutes were all Bulgaria needed to take the match at the Stade de Luxembourg. Kristiyan Balov opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a low shot just inside the left post, and in the 33rd minute Atanas Iliev made it two off a cross that came from a set piece. It was 0-2 at halftime, and that scoreline held until the final whistle in this group C4 clash of the UEFA Nations League.

The curious part is that Luxembourg was far from a beaten side. The hosts held the ball, pushed forward with persistence, and finished the match with more possession and more shots than their opponents, but they lacked precision where it mattered most. Bulgaria, by contrast, was surgical: two chances, two goals.

How the match was decided

The opener came from an assist by Emil Tsenov, who found Balov alone in the center of the box to finish low. Earlier, in the 16th minute, Iliev had already given a warning with a shot that was stopped right along the ground. Bulgaria's persistence paid off twice over: in the 33rd minute, following a foul near the area, Georgi Rusev whipped in a cross that Iliev met with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 0-2, a scoreline that would prove final.

Luxembourg responded with attempts from Vincent Thill and Omar Natami before the break, but could not trouble the Bulgarian defense enough. In the second half the hosts shuffled their lineup, bringing on Tiago Pereira Cardoso, Aiman Dardari and Mathias Olesen from the start of the second period, and created several chances, including a shot from Natami in the 59th minute and another from Hamza Kadamani in the 63rd, neither finding the net. Bulgaria, with substitutions from Stanislav Ivanov, Vladimir Nikolov and Petko Panayotov, managed the lead without too many scares.

The numbers behind the match

Shots on target75
Big chances11

Fouls committed1515

The numbers reflect fairly well what unfolded on the field: Luxembourg controlled the ball and produced more offensive volume, but the result went the other way. Our own xG estimate, calculated from the shots taken during the match (not a prediction), gives 1.664 for Luxembourg against 1.226 for Bulgaria, confirming that the home side generated more danger in terms of chance quality, even if it could not translate that into goals.

Before kickoff, our projection gave the home side a 47 percent chance of winning, 31 percent for a draw and just 22 percent for an away win, with expected goals of 1.35 for Luxembourg and 0.84 for Bulgaria. What happened was exactly the opposite of the favorite's script: Bulgaria won convincingly despite being the side with fewer chances on paper, and did so with two goals, well beyond what that distribution of expectations suggested.

What it means in the standings

In group C4, Bulgaria moved to 4 points with a record of one win, one draw and two losses in four matches played, while Luxembourg sits on 3 points, with one win and three losses in the same number of games. The gap between the two sides in the table is just 1 point, though both remain far from the top spots, where Iceland and Estonia have gone unbeaten so far. For Luxembourg, which showed plenty of interesting things with the ball at their feet, the match leaves the feeling that generating play was not enough to turn around a result that was decided by two precise strikes from Bulgaria.
