Luxembourg rallies past Bulgaria to top Nations League group

Bulgaria took the lead, played a strong first half hour and still ended up losing. That sums up the 1-2 defeat that saw Luxembourg walk away with all three points from the Hristo Botev Stadium in Plovdiv, in the latest round of UEFA Nations League Group C4.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 17th minute: Asen Chandarov finished with his right foot from the center of the box, low and inside the left post, after an assist from Dimitar Velkovski. With that goal, Bulgaria had the game under control and was creating the clearer chances of the first half. But Luxembourg didn't take long to respond. In the 36th minute, Leandro Barreiro leveled the score with a finish strikingly similar to Chandarov's: right foot, center of the box, low, inside the left post. The teams went into the break tied at 1-1.

In the second half, the match stayed even until a set piece broke the deadlock. In the 64th minute, following a corner kick, Vincent Thill struck with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 1-2, again finding the inside of the left post past the Bulgarian goalkeeper. From there, Bulgaria pushed for an equalizer through substitutions (Martin Minchev, Petko Panayotov, Marin Petkov and Stefan Velkov all came on), with Minchev heading over and later firing another effort just wide in the closing minutes, but the hosts couldn't find the goal that would have leveled things again.

The scoreline was tight, but the match was fairly even overall. Luxembourg had the edge in total shots and possession, though Bulgaria was sharper when it came to genuine goal-scoring chances.
