Carlisle United edge past Salford City after missed penalty proves costly

One goal and a missed penalty tell the story of what happened at Brunton Park. Carlisle United won the FA Cup clash with Salford City 1-0, with the decisive goal arriving just before halftime and a costly miss from the visitors that ended up deciding the match.

The first half was scrappy, full of fouls and short on clear chances. Toby Mullarkey tested the keeper with a header in the 11th minute but couldn't find the target, and David Ajiboye had a shot blocked in the 18th. Things heated up with yellow cards shown to Luke Garbutt and Stephen Wearne, before the game's biggest moment arrived in the 35th minute: a penalty for Salford City after Mullarkey fouled Adebola Oluwo inside the box. Ryan Graydon stepped up, but his right-footed effort was saved low by the goalkeeper. A golden chance that Salford couldn't convert.

Carlisle made the visitors pay for the miss. In the 43rd minute, David Ajiboye finished from the center of the box with a low shot into the left corner, set up by a pass from Stephen Wearne, putting Carlisle ahead 1-0 at the break.

A second half without further goals

The second half brought more intensity but the same lack of finishing. Morgan Feeney came close to doubling the lead in the 50th minute with a header that grazed the crossbar. Salford City responded with attempts from Ryan Graydon, Elliott Bonds and Taylor Allen, all from outside the box and none of them troubling the Carlisle goal. Both sides turned to their benches with several changes after the hour mark in search of fresh legs: Salford brought on Macaulay Langstaff, Brendan Wiredu and Kallum Cesay, while Carlisle responded with Jonah Lowes and Luke Armstrong.

The closing stretch had its own share of drama. Deep into stoppage time, Salford pushed forward with shots from Langstaff, Bonds and Wiredu, plus a low drive from Luke Garbutt that was saved right at the base of the post. But Carlisle's defense held firm and the scoreline didn't change until the final whistle.

What the numbers say

The match was even in terms of overall play, though Carlisle was somewhat sharper from corner kicks and held a slight edge in possession.

Total shots and shots on target finished identical for both sides, confirming a game of razor thin margins, decided by Ajiboye's finishing and Graydon's miss from the spot.

What was expected going in

Heading into the match, our projection gave Carlisle United a 50% chance of winning, against 23% for Salford City and 27% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.73 for the home side and 1.12 for the visitors, a combined total of 2.85. The final result, with just one goal on the scoreboard, fell short of that offensive expectation, though Carlisle's win did line up with what we projected as the most likely outcome.

Carlisle United, managed by Rob Elliot, picked up a narrow win in which the penalty missed by Salford City, under Peter Cklamovski, ended up being the difference between a draw and a defeat at Brunton Park.
