Jaden Williams strike gives Colchester United FA Cup win over Worcester City
A 31st-minute goal from Jaden Williams sealed Colchester United's 1-0 win over Worcester City, in a match the home side controlled clearly despite the tight scoreline.

A right-footed strike from the center of the box, rifled into the top left corner, was enough to settle things for Colchester United. Jaden Williams scored the lone goal in the 31st minute, and that finish was all the home side needed to come away with a 1-0 win over Worcester City in an FA Cup clash at the JobServe Community Stadium.
The match opened in scrappy fashion, with plenty of fouls and few clear chances in the opening minutes. Moses Sesay had the first real sniff of goal in the 17th minute, firing a shot high and wide to the left, and shortly after, Jay Williams nearly put his side ahead with a header off a corner that clipped the crossbar in the 23rd minute. Worcester City had their say too: Luke Rowe tried his luck from outside the box in the 26th minute, but his shot was comfortably handled by the keeper.
The closing stretch of the first half was the most intense. In the span of a single minute, between the 30th and 31st, there were three shots in quick succession (from Liam Lockett, Josh Ezewele and Jack Payne) that failed to find the net, until the decisive moment arrived: Jaden Williams curled his effort into the top corner to make it 1-0, a scoreline that would hold for the rest of the match. Williams himself had another good look early in the second half, in the 46th minute, with a left-footed shot that was well saved.
Dominance that didn't translate into more goals
In the second half, Colchester United continued to dictate play. Oscar Thorn rattled the crossbar in the 66th minute after a counterattack, and on the very next play his follow-up shot was again saved. Jack Payne kept trying different angles, testing the keeper with both his left and right foot at various points in the second half, without success. For Worcester City, Nathan Hayward and Harry Burns had their own attempts, but neither managed to seriously trouble the home goal.
The match also saw its share of cards: Charlie Wise and Harry Burns, both of Worcester City, picked up yellows for dangerous play, as did Ben Perry of Colchester United. Substitutions came late for both sides as the match wore on, without much changing in terms of the overall script, and the game stretched into five minutes of second-half stoppage time with no further changes to the scoreline.
The numbers clearly reflect the control exerted by the home side:
| Statistic | Colchester United | Worcester City |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 57 | 43 |
| Shots | 17 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 2 |
| Corners | 4 | - |
| Fouls committed | 7 | 18 |
Colchester United doubled Worcester City's shot total and nearly quadrupled them in shots on target, while also committing far fewer fouls than a Worcester City side that leaned more heavily on physical play to slow down the home team's attacks.
Before the match, our projection gave Colchester United a 38% chance of winning, against a 33% chance of a draw and a 29% chance of a Worcester City win, with expected goals of 1.16 for the home side and 0.99 for the visitors, for a total of 2.15. The final result, with just one goal scored, fell short of that expected total, though the outcome, a home win, was indeed the scenario we considered most likely.
With this result, Colchester United takes the three points on offer from this tie thanks to a solid performance that generated considerably more attacking volume than the final score suggested. Worcester City, despite its defensive effort and a handful of forays forward, couldn't find a way to cause enough trouble to leave the JobServe Community Stadium with anything to show for it.
