Celta vs. Osasuna Pushed from Sunday to Thursday Over Balaidos Pitch Problems

The heat wave that hit Galicia last week set back the pitch's recovery just after it had received LaLiga's approval.

Celta vs. Osasuna Pushed from Sunday to Thursday Over Balaidos Pitch Problems

If you were planning to fire up the grill for Sunday night, you might want to rethink things: Celta vs. Osasuna is not happening as scheduled. The reason has nothing to do with the calendar or TV slots, but with something as basic as the condition of the grass at Balaidos.

The match, part of Matchday 1 of LaLiga, was set to be played Sunday at 9:30 p.m. local time (7:30 p.m. GMT). It will now be played on Thursday, August 27, at 8:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. GMT), after league officials, working alongside both clubs and the Royal Spanish Football Federation, decided to postpone it due to a disease affecting the pitch at the Vigo stadium.

The Galician club was blunt in its statement: "the pitch is not fit for playing soccer." The detail is striking because this isn't a problem that came out of nowhere. Just last week, LaLiga had conducted a technical inspection of the stadium and signed off on the work done to eliminate the disease, certifying that the field met the required quality and safety standards.

The heat did the pitch no favors

So what changed in just a few days? The high temperatures recorded in southern Galicia over the past week. According to the club, that heat produced "an adverse effect" right as the playing surface had been showing solid progress. In other words, the grass was improving, but the weather worked against it and forced officials to halt everything before risking the integrity of the field or the match itself.

Celta expressed regret over the inconvenience this decision causes fans, many of whom had already made plans to support the team for the start of the season. In its statement, the club thanked supporters for "their understanding in this exceptional circumstance," making clear the move was not taken lightly but rather in response to an issue that had been closely monitored together with LaLiga.

For Osasuna, the reshuffle also means adjusting travel and logistics, though the new Thursday kickoff still preserves the significance of the match as a season opener for both squads. It remains to be seen whether the Balaidos pitch will be in the condition everyone expects by then, because beyond the postponement, what's really at stake is making sure the campaign's opening match is played on a field that lives up to the occasion.
