Chelsea survive Craven Cottage thriller to win 2-3
João Pedro scored in the opening seconds, but Fulham fired back with two goals from Josh King and Gonzalo García in a five-goal thriller.

Barely ten seconds had ticked off the clock when João Pedro was already celebrating. Chelsea took the lead practically straight from kickoff, finishing off a counterattack with a low shot just inside the post, set up by Cole Palmer. It was the first sign of an afternoon that would end with Chelsea winning 2-3 at Craven Cottage, though Fulham made things anything but easy.
The hosts responded quickly. In the 22nd minute, Josh King leveled things with a low shot from inside the box after a cross from Timothy Castagne, and for a good while it looked like Fulham might hold the tie. But right before halftime, in the 40th minute, Morgan Rogers restored Chelsea's lead with a shot down the middle of the goal, assisted by Maxence Lacroix, sending the visitors into the break ahead, 1-2.
The decisive blow came just as the second half got underway. In the 48th minute, Cole Palmer extended the lead with an angled shot from the left, assisted by João Pedro, making it 1-3. Fulham still had an answer: five minutes later, Gonzalo García headed home into the top corner to make it 2-3. That's how it finished, because despite pushing hard in the second half, with attempts from Castagne, Sessegnon and Robinson, Fulham couldn't find an equalizer.
A match closer than the scoreline suggests
The possession and passing numbers clearly favor Fulham, but Chelsea was the sharper team when it mattered.
| Stat | Fulham | Chelsea |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 61.5 | 38.5 |
| Shots | 14 | 18 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 6 |
| Big chances | 1 | 4 |
| Corners | 6 | 4 |
| Passes | 620 | 389 |
| Fouls committed | 12 | 7 |
That tells much of the story: Fulham controlled the ball, but Chelsea created four big chances to the hosts' one, and despite having less than half the possession, ended up with more shots on target. According to our estimate based on the match's shot data, Chelsea generated 1.869 expected goals to Fulham's 1.655, a gap that lines up with how the scoreline played out, even though both sides had a case for scoring more.
Before kickoff, our preview gave Fulham a 32% chance of winning, 27% for a draw and 41% in Chelsea's favor, with a total expected goals count of 2.93 (1.36 for the hosts and 1.57 for the visitors). The final result, five goals in total and an away win, tracks with that projection, though the match had more twists than any percentage could capture: Fulham managed to equalize and then cut the deficit again, and Chelsea had to answer every time they did.
What the result leaves behind
In the Premier League standings, both teams arrived with one match played. Chelsea picked up its first win to sit on 3 points, while Fulham remained pointless after the defeat. The gap between the two sides in the table, with this result factored in, stands at 3 points. The match also produced a couple of injury concerns: Jorrel Hato had to be substituted by Pep Chavarría for Chelsea, and Cole Palmer, who scored a goal and provided an assist, was replaced by Estêvão, also due to a physical issue. For Fulham, the takeaway is of a team that competed toe to toe, created chances and scored twice, but paid a heavy price in the moments when Chelsea stepped on the gas.
